They just re-signed Messi for a 50% reduction in salary but they have to dump at least €100m in wages to even register Messi (and their free transfers). I'm not sure who they can deal that other clubs can/will absorb.

Barca's issues are the insane wages they gave players, because who can afford these wages for these older guys? Is there really a market for Cou and his insane salary? What team is going to take that on, even for a free? Or Pjanic? The 2 guys on big wages I could easily see bringing back major values are Ter Stergen and FDJ. Pedri clearly could bring in a high transfer fee but his wages are low.

I'm not even sure they can sell Griez right now because it's not guaranteed they could sell him for what's still owed on his transfer fees. I think he has to be sold for more than €75m or so, which seems absurd given his wages currently, age, and output the past couple seasons.

And you didn’t even mention guys like Dembélé or Umtiti who have hardly played at all and still make like 200-300k per week

But I’m sure they’ll get bailed out somehow

Their predicament cracks me up considering all the shite Javier Tebas talks.

Aren't Barca and Atleti doing the Saúl/Griezmann swap?

possibly but it won't get them close to fully being out of the hole and one of the hold ups is Barca is asking for a larger transfer fee for Griez than AM want to pay. i forget which article i read went over it but that's where i got the 75M estimate. there is a lot of complicated accounting going on to juke the numbers to work on paper

everyone who is dealing with Barca know they have Barca up against the wall AND they have to placate stars who will get salary reductions, too

Barca has to demand a lot but they have no power to do so, basically

Barca would still have to cover a portion of the wages no way Atletico will pay all that

Barca can’t even register everyone they signed on a free

Why would AG give up the insane wages he's being paid.. and why would Atleti match them???

Thats the part that never squared with me, regarding the proposed swap...

I've done absolutely no research on this and am just spit-balling here, but could Barca "demote" some of the players to the B squad to make the numbers work?

Yeah it doesn't make sense. He's old so maybe he thinks he can get more guaranteed over the length of the deal than he'll get with this current one. That's kind of what Messi did when he took a "pay cut". Basically deferred his wages until he won't be playing.

Or maybe he just hates Messi and Barca that much. He lost some of his prime years being misused in Barca.

No. La Liga has a "salary cap" that takes into consideration basically all operating expenses, including the academy and wages of lower teams.

Unpopular but they should have sold Messi. Not sure if they could have ever, but if they could they should.

Or not have done some of these shite deals for decently good not great players that just sit on the bench because you have Messi.

when was their last good transfer in?

they keep buying super expensive guys who demand insane wages b/c of the pay structure and transfer fees...who don't end up being good. so they have to buy more super expensive guys who demand insane wages, etc.

it all fell apart when PSG triggered Neymar's release clause. they had to fill the gap and spent all that money on...coutinho and dembele. not only did they waste all that transfer fee on meh guys, they're still paying both insane wages. they basically kept doing that over and over again

Years of their academy players being stars papered over terrible transfer dealings.

Some highlights:
Mathieu- 18m
Vermalaen - 17m
Arda Turan - 30m
Andre Gomes - 30m
Coutinho/Dembele - shambles
Zlatan - 60m+ Eto
Chygrynskyi - 22m

Flop after flop after flop

When you look at some of the wages being offered agents must piss themselves laughing when they see what gets offered. Even Frenkie De Jong being on the reported €410k a week is ridiculous, that must have been a 20x pay rise for him

COVID and lockdowns can't be underestimated here, nobody goes to the city of Barcelona and doesn't visit the nou camp. If the tourism money still rolled in I doubt we hear about this

The last good transfer is arguably Neymar.

Frenkie isn’t bad but not worth the money, same with Griezeman.

Coutinho and Ous Dembele are obviously the very worst.

Agreed

He's had PT issues

He can't coexist with Messi and that's a big deal they should have thought of

Should have bought Pulisic instead. I don’t remember who said it but I remember hearing some commentator say that Barca bought the wrong Dortmund winger. Now one is a CL winner and the other is not.
