Say no to straps. Start training your grip.

I train my grip 3x a week and have been doing so for years, my grip has NEVER failed me once, on anything.

Then again, I’m a grip nerd and love to train grippers, pinch blocks, etc all that good stuff.

This thread fricked me. I tried switching from a mixed grip (over/under) to a hook grip and I guess I messed up the technique. Only did one rep of heavy and grip failed, then couldn't do another set. Had to decrease and do some volume work.

What gives out first on your max effort deadlifts?

I’ve only been lifting for a few months and really haven’t experienced a deadlift failure until today. I’ve just been doing one set of five reps 1.5x per week and steadily increasing weight and warmup sets.

Today was a grip failure, no doubt about it. My forearms were exhausted. I’ll see what happens on Friday.

It'll take some time to get used to the hook grip if you decide to stay with that. Something I'm going to start doing is working on strengthening each individual finger. I've done that a lot with my toes, which are often neglected, and that has been beneficial.

The alternate grip works for some people. If that's more comfortable, you could stick with it, but I'd suggest at least watching a bicep tear compilation video before you go all out with that.

(I actually meant that question for The Silverback. I have issues with this site on my phone sometimes. I'll tap something, but the site matches up my tap with something else nearby.)

I got up to my max dead of 610 about 4 years ago through a bunch of failed attempts on my way up to that and my grip never failed. It was always that first 6 to 7 inches of initial pull from the floor using proper technique that generally let me know whether I was going to make a successful lift. I don’t think there is another lift where you need to be so spot on with technique if you are going to pull a max with heavy weight that won’t leave you really injured in the process if you don’t. If your grip is giving out and you still have juice in the tank than you need to get that fixed before you think about hitting maxes.

So what body part was giving out first on the "failed attempts"?

For me it is always my lower back. I almost know in the first few inches off the floor if I am probably going to get the lift or not. For that reason, I did a bunch of deads on my journey to my PB msx with the weight sitting on a 35 plate on each side so I kind of cheat the first inch of the floor.

If you aren’t competing, use straps past a certain weight you fail at

What do you mean when you say your lower back?
