Bobby Bonilla Day explained - Why the Mets still pay him $1.19M today and every July 1
The calendar has turned to July 1, and that means one thing: It's time for Mets fans everywhere to wish each other a Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Why? On Thursday, 58-year-old Bobby Bonilla will collect a check for $1,193,248.20 from the New York Mets, as he has and will every July 1 from 2011 through 2035.
In 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla's contract.
However, instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9 million at the time, the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest.

I would have signed this too. Mets are beyond stupid.

There has to be more to this story.

Jesus.
Either the Mets had the worst contract negotiator of all time, or Bonilla had the best.
Who in the hell in the Mets organization thought this was a good idea?

Not sure if serious.

its not even close to the worst deffered contract. The Atlanta braves are paying 1.12 million per year plus $9.1 million at principal until age 69 for Bruce Sutter

he was my favorite player back in the early 90s

the Mets’ owner, Fred Wilpon, was invested with Bernie Madoff at the time, and he thought he could make more money investing that $5.9 million than he would end up paying out to Bonilla.

Ryan Reynolds on point with a Mint Mobile commercial to honor the legend.
Mint Mobile Bobby Bonilla Commercial
I think they might have used the Pelaton Husband and Wife from the Pelaton commercial. Maybe not though. Kinda hard to tell about the wife. She looks close
