At this point, he's probably 1b to John Paul Jones as 1a for me.

I love what he and Danny are able to do together. I would listen to jam sessions of just that rhythm section.

Lots of great bassists out there, but Tony Levin's entire body of work puts him at the top for me. Check out the new Liquid Tension Experiment as exhibit A.
