Carlisle to Pacers

Pacers worked quietly and quickly to get a deal done with Rick Carlisle. Team had planned to start interviews with several candidates in Chicago this week. Carlisle was a top assistant to Larry Bird early in his coaching career with Pacers.

Sources: The Pacers are hiring Rick Carlisle as head coach. He will sign a 4-year, $29 million contract.
I don't see them trading anyone now unless it's an upgrade to what they have. You don't spend 7.5 million a year on a coach then start rebuilding.

Mentally preparing myself for a letdown offseason.

Interesting move. Is he asking for player control? I would think he would want to pick his own guys or to put someone in that spot to get the players he wants..

This sort of made sense from the beginning.
And is a great thing for us. He wasn't going to be a candidate for us at all, so takes one job off the table for guys we are interested in.

Agreed. Was a fan of Carlisle in the beginning. But after hearing the recent reports, glad we didn’t get him.

he has a history there and was linked to them pretty much the moment he stepped down.
He was not a candidate for us because he is SVG part two. He is a complete a-hole, old school, hardline, white coach.
They weren't going to go in the same direction.

Another coach off the board. Hopefully, we’ll soon follow with Lee.

If they make any moves it would be small ones to fit the roster better….
Maybe they see how well Warren fits and then maybe move him at the deadline. He could also be a primary scorer off the bench for them, and they could move Lamb. I could also see them moving Turner for perhaps a more skilled wing player or stretch 4, while they play Sabonis at the 5 position.

Taking Carlisle off the market doesn’t really affect us.
Taking Brogdon/Turner/Sabonis off the market does.
The tea leaves are saying more and more that we should wait another year to take a big swing. Though a seller’s market means we may be able to get better value for Bled/Adams than we originally predicted.
A sign-and-trade Ball for Turner trade makes some sense for both teams. I could see how the pacers would value Ball as both a secondary creator and insurance for Brogdon’s health. Plus it’s not like they haven’t dangled Turner as a return in a sign and trade before

We are in such a tough spot here, and it’s pretty squarely on the front office. They have tinkered for two seasons, and have remained stuck in the mud. The slow play to build a roster in Zion’s first few years was the right call, while building assets to bring in better players later on. It’s been so botched, however, that the discontent from our star players will force Griffin’s hand.
This is probably the time to take best player available in the draft, and use lesser assets to move on from the bad contracts for better fits. I feel like the pressure to push for another star player now is so high, that we will mess this up even worse than it is now.

Turner and Sabonis are both solid players with games that are not that similar. I have never understood why they can't play together. Unless you are going small all the time, they can co-exist and they should overlap maybe 20 minutes a game (if the both average around 34). If Carlisle can make that work and both players take that next step, it could be a dangerous team. I wouldn't move either one, unless he is convinced they can never play together..

Carlisle is the perfect guy to bring in to make Turner and Sabonis work. Carlisle is going to really value Turner's stretching skillset. I'm envisioning Turner doubling the attempts from 3 easily now.

That sounds horrible, Turner shot 33% this season.

Carlisle reiterating that Indy won't be sellers.

Rick Carlisle to ESPN: "It’s a team of skilled, unselfish guys that play hard. It’s always possible that moves could be made before the season, but I think [GM Kevin Pritchard] and I are both very excited about getting the roster healthy and seeing what this team can be."

Yeah, take Sabonis and Brogdon off the board until at least the deadline if not next offseason.
Man...the sellers are going to have to come from unexpected places.

How many coaches get hired before the Pels make a move?
I agree
