Except we were in a CWS final a few years ago in a super regional this year. Our facilities and attendance is still top 10 with top 5 recruiting classes and a group of freshman and sophomores that are proven, with experience and have the potential to be great. One is not like the other

Yea I was hoping that wasn’t where you were headed but at least I know your true intentions now
Do you think Woodward is waiting bc he’s being turned down ? Why would he not have just hired a G5 coach 2-3 weeks ago ?

Texas FB thought they were getting Saban and Urban in the past, with fans like “well we’re Texas, why wouldn’t he want to come here?” before “settling” on those hires
Texas hiring Charlie Strong was questionable but Herman was the hottest head coaching name out there when he was hired.

FSU FB - same with Bob Stoops. FSU fans were convinced they were too good to hire a G5 coach when Taggart was fired
The FSU football job, right now, is not the job the LSU baseball job is comparatively. There are plenty of jobs better than that job, especially with the state of that program and the subpar facilities. There's a reason Jimbo left.

Tennessee - Gruden and every other rumored high profile coach before “settling” yet again on a G5 coach
Tennessee football hasn't been a destinatioin job in a long, long time

South Carolina and Texas Baseball both “settled” on G5 coaches after fans were convinced they weren’t beneath hiring a top name
South Carolina hired exactly who they wanted to hire when Ray Tanner retired. The hire just blew up in their faces.

Kentucky Basketball fans thought they were getting Billy Donovan before “settling” on a G5 coach
Kentucky didn't "settle on" John Calipari A "G5 coach" doesn't have any meaning in college basketball. Memphis was in the national title game the year Calipari left.

Miami FB, USC FB...
Miami has been a dead program for awhile. USC hired a coach away from a top 15 program (Tennessee) while on probation. Sarkisian was also one of the hottest head coaches in the sport when they hired him.
Here's a list of several hires that were homerun hires (at the time) at major programs with big money to offer
Urban Meyer - OSU
Jim Harbaugh - Michigan
Nick Saban - Alabama
Roy Williams - UNC
John Calipari - Kentucky
Shaka Smart - Texas
Chip Kelly - UCLA
Jimbo Fisher - A&M
James Franklin - Penn State

Have a feeling we will be left holding flowers at the doorstep with the guys in Omaha
Maybe/probably so. But you do have to think that if there wasn't REAL interest by one (possibly more) of the guys coaching in Omaha LSU would have already moved on.
That said, I suspect all of the schools who have teams competing in the CWS right now are happy with their coaches and probably want to do what is necessary to keep them at their school. So I think for LSU to have their sights set on getting a guy currently coaching in the CWS they feel they have a really good shot at getting him (hopefully not just unwarranted hubris)

Vitello hired Sexton this year. Even if he doesn't want/take the LSU job, it's smart to wait to hear them out and to not sign what's on the table from Tennessee.

One of my best friend's parents are nighbors of Sexton in Memphis. His brother is also married to Jimmy's brother's daughter, (Jimmy's brother works with/for Jimmy). My buddy's family is also very connected at Tennessee, several high ranking donors. He's very concerned about Vitello leaving. He said he's been told Danny White has dropped the ball and drug his feet with locking up Vitello's new deal and facikity upgrades, and LSU is definitely in play right now. He's also voiced his concern about Sexton being involved as it pertains to Tennessee. Sexton is a UT alum but he's never helped Tennessee land big name guys and has fricked them with some of their contracts (Pruitt, Butch). TIFWIW

Towards the end of the interview, Mainieri said “i wish i couldve gotten him to succeed me at lsu, but he wouldnt bite. He loves virginia and wants to be the coach there and nowhere else.”
Well shite.
Seems likely Godwin is it then.

Oh hell yeah.
Vitello could win some games in Omaha and increase his leverage.

The only allegiance Sexton has in this world is to money.

I think it is bold, and probably just a case of an agent telling LSU that (whichever coach) they would be willing to hear what LSU is offering AFTER the CWS. I can almost guarantee that none of these coaches at the CWS are even allowing their agents to talk to them about LSU. They have jobs to do at the highest level. So, I don’t believe that we have any actual “in” with any of them. Just the future willingness to listen, which leaves us at step one. I’m not worried about it, because I truly believe that there are quite a few coaches who can lead LSU to Omaha and a NC.

Of course. This might be the best leverage opportunity Vitello EVER has in his career:
(1) LSU is one of the very few schools in the nation that will commit significant resources, including a big HC salary, to the program. Even if the goal is to stay at Tennessee you want to use LSU to set the bar to reach as high as possible. And very few, if any, will set as high a bar as LSU.
(2) Vitello's "stock" may never be higher. Worst case scenario for him is this is just a tremendous season where everything came together that will never happen again. Best case is this raises the level of expectations at UT and the enthusiasm generated this season can never be matched.
These opportunities for career advancement don't come around often. So when they do you leverage them for all they are worth.

It will 100% be. If he signs with Tennessee, it's very unlikely he'll ever leave there, and it's not every day a program like LSU is looking for a new coach and you're a target.

He’ll come back to Arkansas when DVH retires
Posted on 6/21/21 at 11:08 am to josh336
He’s built a solid program that’s hitting on cylinders! Not to mention Charlottesville is a beautiful town tucked away at foot of blue ridge mountains. Can’t blame him for staying.

meh. Arkansas could just as easily also go after other former DVH assistants like Matt Deggs or Lane Burroughs. Depending on how long DVH coaches, I think guys on staff now like Nate Thompson could be considered as well.
