Wtf is on the bottom of that dam if it’s only an 8 foot drop
In North Carolina, the bottom of dams resemble the surface of the asteroid in Armageddon:

Article from 2 years ago calling it a "drowning machine"
Same river, different dam.
Pretty similar looking, though.

Wouldn't there be a pool of water at the base of where the damn releases. That's less feet than jumping off your roof into a pool.

Don't mess with weirs. They are extremely dangerous.

low head dam
Why are low head dams so dangerous?
Low-head dams pose a serious danger to vessel operators. Surface currents below low-head dams can suck vessels toward the face of the dam. Currents above low-head dams can sweep vessels over the dam. The recirculating currents and turbulent waters below these dams can swamp vessels and drown boaters.

You'd think the fact people were calling it a "drowning machine" would lead officials to put a railing or blockade of some sort on top that prevented this.
But in the end, there was signage, so I guess it is Darwinism. Still sucks for those families. What a way to go, drowning while tubing down a weak arse little river.

Same thing happened to that kid from Shreveport on Lake Bisteneau dam, He was still in the water when they found him I believe. The force of the falling water over the dam kept him under. Horrible, tragedy for all involved.

Low Head damm, acts like a washing machine.
Same as west Pearl

The fact that the tubes are being pulled up against the wall of the damn shows the effect of the undercurrent

Why don't they at least have a float line before the dam?

quote:Back in the 80's my cousin drowned in the water below the dam at Lake Bistineau. When the water is actively spilling over, the pool below is churning, and yes it very difficult for even experienced swimmers. Similar to rip currents and strong waves in the ocean, water can overpower you faster than you anticipate.
But over a dam it’s likely not. As others have said you’re likely to get sucked under.

I wonder if it was people that don't live there? As locals know better.
It has been very hot & humid I can see them wanting to cool off.
I wouldn't go in these waters, Duke Energy spilt ash in them years ago.
Also gators came ashore from the ocean here and a big arse snake.

low head dams are basically drowning machines. They do a great job but are near impossible to get out of, including boats. This happens all the time and although they look innocent they will kill you.

Not so sure about that, I went to high school in that county and calling it a shithole is disrespectful to shitholes

That picture makes escape process look less likely especially with panic and group of people together.

i need to see these signs to see how insane these people are for floating down this river with a death machine at one part of it.
