What often goes unsaid is the BMI way of determining obesity leaves a lot to be desired. By their measurements I was borderline obese when I was in the military. I have high single digits body fat % at the time. I was by my height (6-2) borderline obese at 245 but it was over 90% muscle.
Uh oh, retard alert

I'm in a town of ~2500 and I've seen four fat people in two and a half weeks.

quote:Lack of exercise is a problem but as someone who lost 120 lbs, without exercise, without counting carbs or calories, without exercising portion control; simply by switching to whole unprocessed foods and eliminating added sugar and oil, I personally believe the modern industrial diet shares the largest part of the blame. We have obese toddlers now.
I agree about the food choice, but I find the biggest culprit is lack of exercise and/or physical activity.
The fact that people are so comfortable staying locked up in the pandemic is evidence of this. They have no problem being big fat bullfrogs perched up on their couch all day 24/7. That feels "safe" to them. That tells you everything you need to know. These same people were all about shutting down gyms and anything involving exercise.

There's no doubt about it. Excexise isn't needed to not be fat and not being fat leads to successful health outcomes almost every time.
Excexise is definitely a good thing, but it certainly isn't needed to be healthy

You’re probably in the region we call west Kansas. Anything east of Limon is a wasteland of big gulps and twizzlers

It kills me to see people eat fast food multiple times a month, drink tons of booze, add cheese to every damned thing they eat and then blame their desk job or busy schedule for their obesity.
Switch to real food people. It should be a no-brainer.

I'd have to agree with him. He didn't say exercise wasn't needed to be fit. He said it's not needed to be healthy (free of chronic disease).

You are either in Estes Park or the quaint mountain town of Breckinridge. If the person is wearing jean shorts, any shirt that lists an altitude, or more than one fatty to the group, it’s safe to say they are tourist.
I landed in San Antonio a few weeks ago. Holy shite... 90% of the people were obese.
It’s difficult to enjoy CO as a fatty.

Not sure how this turned into rural vs urban, but no matter where you go America is fat as frick. Everywhere I have been, it's equally divided that most people are fat.
I live in a huge city and the fat people I see are lower class passerby. In my neighborhood, most people are fit and healthy, even into old age. Compared to the current state of my hometown, it is like a different world of hygiene and health.
More so than rural urban, it is a rich / poor dynamic. Whereas obesity was once a sign of prosperity, it is now a marker of poverty.

Totally disagree. You have to have some physical activity. Walking, etc. Less physical people have more health concerns.
One reason for the jump in obesity is the lack of physical activity people get today compared to 50 years ago. Moving from blue collar to admin type jobs hasn't helped.

I'm referring to exercise as a dedicated intentional activity. A concept that would be foreign and possibly comical to a large portion of [healthy, fit]humans in history.
I will grant you that if you spend 12 hours a day in a chair you will need to engage in some dedicated physical activities.
