My god. I’m not even sure how some of that framing is even supporting itself.
Ya, I saw that and thought there has to be some serious voodoo shite going on there.

Dealing with construction contractors is toward the top of my things I hate list.
It's pretty up there for me as well. It just attracts the worst kinds of people. I always feel like they are trying to screw me in someway. Same feelings I have for car sales people.

What kind of retarded top plate does ole boy have working there?

You mean you don't need 6 top plates and a 2x6 turned sideways to set rafters on? Rafters that don't even go all the way so rafter tails had to be added separately for the soffit and rascia?
Are you telling me the H style in between post support by a 2x4 wont last?
Hey, but at least he strapped it all together

I'm not in construction but is that horizontal "beam" really just a bunch of stacked 2x6s?

If you will notice that instead of buying longer lumber, he just spliced his joist together. That's a cost saver right there.
You can also tell he had no idea how to cut rafters. You can see where he tried to cut the notch and missed so looks like he gave up and just nailed it as is to the board then added rafter tails to the side.

why in the hell did you get an contractor from Monteque that had 1 month worth of experience to work in Lake Charles? I hope you didn't pay in advance for that disaster! Get lawyered up now.

Those random angle supports are fun too. Not a single one in line with the other.

Well, a laminated beam is stacked lumber but it is glued and made in a factory for a reason. That's the only way it can pass code and be used for open area structure support. What he did was not only not code but also not needed. Looks like his columns were not tall enough so he just stacked lumber to add height.

yeah this is confusing.
Did this guy have two separate contracts? One for labor, one for materials? Or one contract and the guy subcontracted the labor out?

It wasn't me.
I have been a contractor for nearly 18 years now. Just sharing what some people are fighting by hiring jackasses.

For those of us who aren't contractors, what's wrong?

It doesn't matter. He clearly acted as the GC either way. Some people think they can skirt the system by having you pay the "subs" directly. He rolled his profit into material cost and would also probably take a cut from the sub. The law and the contractor board will not care as it's obvious he was acting in the capacity of a GC.
If I send a sub to do work for someone I usually do it as a favor and stay out of it 100%. Of course, I only send someone I would trust.

I think the contractor is just an idiot and thinks he isn't responsible because he had a sub do the concrete work

I could've done better than that with my 5 and 8 year old daughters.

Here is how a pole barn frame should look for comparison
