What’s the first memory you have of a major news story?

Major being something that made national/world wide waves
I’m pretty sure mine is 9/11. I seem to have a faint memory of the bush/gore election but 9/11 is the first where I actually understood what was happening.

The fall of Saigon and Elvis' death

If you consider Bush/Gore major than that would be the first one for me. Was alive but too young to remember the fall of the USSR/Communism, the Challenger Explosion or the LA Riots. I vaguely remember the OJ Simpson trial and understood it a little bit but was too young to truly understand it.

Yeah must have been 9-10 old and I remember my dad coming home and telling us he saw it happen on the news walking through a Sears store that day came home and told us about it and we then watched it.

Challenger or The baby that got stuck in the well. Baby Jessica if my memory serves.

I think I can speak for the bulk of late Gen X when I say the Challenger explosion.
Followed by Baby Jessica and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Definitely 9/11 for me as a vivid memory. Though I have some faint memories of news coverage of firing missiles into... Serbia? in the late 90s. I would've been ~10-11 at the time.
