So low pay with no benefits and they love you? Got some weird Stockholm Syndrome-type stuff going on here.

CPA is always an option with accounting degree

Or just a bunch of coursework. I'm just a class short myself, with a computer science degree.

The obstacle is that there's no real accounting career path for people trying to get into it from another field. I can't go do audit for $60,000 per year with Hunter and Chasity who just got out of Ole Miss business school. They wouldn't have me even if I wanted to do it.

Go to nursing school. I have a friend who was a firefighter paramedic and he went back to school to get his nursing degree. Him and his wife travel the country as travel nurses and make bank. Granted they don’t have kids so they can take all kind of great assignments.

Do not go to law school. I would go to a large reputable financial company and start from the ground floor and work my way up. The benefits and incentives will pay off big time by the time you reach your mid-40s

What company in today's world can you start at the lowest level and work your way to top? You need degrees or be able to aquire certifications or higher titles in whatever way possible to continue up ladder. If someone could stay under the same roof and work your way up then it would happen more. It's even less likely with people working further into their lives. If everyone retired at 60 then you would have openings for upward mobility. With people working into 70s it delays and possibly halts altogether the ability to advance upward with the same company.

Personally, I would ask for 25 an hours and then settle on atleast at 22. When you get an offer on hand, go talk candidly with your boss about getting a raise and career path. Do not mention the other offer.

If you like what he says and you get a raise, then stay. Don’t leave without raise in writing.

If you don’t like what he says, turn in notice.

Pretty simple really

Fintech jobs is what you should be pursuing. Big money if you can get your foot in the door. Remote work too

Possible position: AML (anti money laundering) analyst for a smallish bank. Basically I would be checking customers bank accounts for any suspicious activity (try to see if they are laundering money). Then I report it to the investigator and they investigate it.

Between helping manage my in-laws expenses and bills, transferring money to my kids until they are fully independent, sending income to ownership partners on rental property, etc. I move money from bank to bank and account to account all the time. Not laundering, but I bet I keep some $12 an hour person extremely busy somewhere.

I've thought about it but I'm probably too stupid.

I realize this. The guys who I am emailing all day probably make twice what I make and they do the same job. He hired me a few months ago with no experience so I’m trying not to complain too much

IMO, you need to focus on these 2 points right here. The pay difference is comparable that it should not factor into your decision making unless you have problems making ends meet.

I know I don’t want to do sales in the future and I’m unsure if I want to be an accountant

AML position has a higher ceiling as I could use it to jump into regulatory compliance as soon as I finish my degree (2 more years). I could also move up to become an AML investigator, or move to a larger bank (and if I do I’d probably make almost $20 an hour after a year or 2).
On 2 separate occasions in my life/career I took significant pay decreases so I could put myself in a more favorable position to get where I wanted to go in my career. Both times I took more than a 33% decrease in pay to get into the accounting field, then to go from public to private (even gave up benefits here). I knew I would quickly make up the loss in income, and it was vital to get to the direction I wanted to go in life. In the 15 years since I took my 1st pay cut I am not quite where I envisioned I would be when I started (primarily because I put a lot more value in family time now), but I am happy where I am from a career perspective

These pay grades are very low. I would just tell you to find something that pays more than the poverty line.

I probably could get to second in command. Not too sure if I want to stay here or not though. It’s kind of a niche industry that I would need to learn a lot more about

Another piece of advice. It isn't okay for your boss and his wife to just like you. They need to respect you. This goes for any job that you may ever have. Many "bosses" will throw you under the bus just to appease a customer that is a POS. I know from recent experience. My colleagues that left or were fired before me also know this all to well. Tread carefully and good luck. You are worth more than $14 an hour.
