So I’m sitting on a bench in between Central Park and the Dakota, where John Lennon was shot in 1980 (and where Yoko Ono still lives, I think) while I wait to fly to Iceland tonight. And I’m thinking: Who was the better Beatle based on all factors: vocal talent, instrumental skill, looks, charisma, leadership, etc.?

John could kick Paul's arse. He had plenty of practice beating up his wives, plus the Liverpool DJ who accused him of going kweer w/Brian Epstein

Just referring to the complete package of both musicians. It usually helps your appeal to be good looking, especially since a large number of Beatle fans in the ‘60s were screaming girls.

Singing ability - I give the edge to Paul.

Musical ability - not even a serious question - Paul was better on keys, for sure, and as John was primarily a guitar player and Paul was as good a rhythm guitar player and quite a bit better lead player. Plus, Paul could play almost anything. Paul probably a better arranger/producer, as well.

Looks/charisma? Sounds like some gay shite to me (NTTAWWT) Obviously, if we rate such things, Maca wins on all this kinds of stuff, IMHO.

Leadership? McCartney

Lennon's only real advantage is that he did write smarter lyrics and his compositions were more complicated.

Singing and musical ability--Paul gets the edge. He played multiple instruments very well, and had amazing range with his voice.

Songwriting/charisma/leadership--John gets the edge here. Paul mostly wrote radio-friendly pop songs whereas John had more personal and experimental music and lyrics. He was the founder and natural leader of the band as well.

Paul attempted to lead after Brian Epstein died, and that's when it started to go downhill. The songwriting was still top notch, but the band's attitudes really started to sour once Epstein died and John didn't really care about the band anymore.

In The Beatles, I prefer Lennon. Outside of the band, I prefer Wings to Lennon's solo stuff...other than Double Fantasy.

They complemented each other perfectly. I think it’s a matter of preference on who you think was better. I always liked Paul’s music within the Beatles.
After the breakup I actually think George exhibited the most talent. At least for my taste.
By the way I do hope you’ve taken in Strawberry Fields while in Central Park
Strawberry Fields- Central Park

john wrote one solo song (working class hero) that’s better than anything Paul ever wrote after the breakup. That is the only thing he has on Paul though who was the superior musician in every way

interesting to me that neither one of them wrote a good song after 1980 and one of them was dead. I don’t think their influence on each other ended when the Beatles did

LOL!

I’m not asking whose dick you would rather have sucked. I’m just asking for all factors that led to the Beatles’ enormous fame (and Lennon and McCartney’s roles in it) to be taken into consideration.

I have but not in this trip. I just happened to be taking a walk down Central Park West this afternoon. At JFK airport now.

I give the edge to McCartney, BTW.

Don't you think it's a shame that there's no landmark of any kind around that spot.

I remember the first time I walked to the street and was disappointed that there was no commemoration of any kind. Just a hot dog cart and vendor on the corner. I remember being saddened and a little pissed. I know the poor guy was only trying to make a living but I thought it was somewhat disrespectful I guess.

I know there's Strawberry Fields in Central Park, but nothing at the Dakota. That's just wrong. Not sure what I was expecting.

Guess I shouldn't have expected anything. There's no commemoration in Dallas where Kennedy was shot, either. I remember the first time I drove around the curve and was surprised that there wasn't anything marking the event. And I remember getting chills driving in the exact spot it happened.

Kinda felt the same way passing the entrance to the Dakota.

And no, I didn't buy a hot dog from the vendor.

Hmm, I missed that. Of course, the couple times I've been there, I was driving and paying attention to traffic. Didn't know to look for it. I wonder when it was put there. The last time I was there would have been the late 90s.

Now I wonder if there is some sort of marking that I missed at the Dakota? If so, I'll have to return and apologize to the hot dog vendor for my ill feelings towards him. The last time I was there would have been the late 90s also. I'm sure nearly a quarter of a century later, he's still there.

ETA: As for the OP,

Vocal talent: Paul (although John was an awesome "screamer").

Instrumental skill: Paul (how much instrumental skill does it really take to play rhythm guitar)?

Looks: Paul (wasn't he "the cute one.")?

Charisma: John (but it only came out after Yoko arrived on the scene).

Leadership: John (wasn't it technically "his" band?).

Bottom line, as has already been pointed out, they both worked very well together and in harmony with one another.
