The maintenance person from the cable company turned off the emergency brake off which was supposed to stop this from happening. I think it kept triggering because it was too sensitive.

This is my nightmare.
Falling to your death in a cable car in Italy when the cable snaps?
That's a weird and oddly-specific nightmare to think about.

Hopefully no longer two weeks behind Italy

Jesus H. They were almost to the point where they could've jumped to the platform.

When they were building the local one, one of the anchors snapped and the cable crashed down onto cars in the parking lot. I was about 30 yards from the cable.
Every time I ride it, it goes through my mind. Its an 1800' drop.

Looks more like the cable broke than a brake failure

The cable broke, yes. The emergency brakes (two of them) were mechanically locked open, and if not locked open would have stopped the car.

Damn. I thought it was just sort of a snap and plunging straight down scary. The fricking several second roller coaster ride before puts it over the top.

To me, docking in those things is the scariest moment.

AVE does good work with stuff like this. It doesn't hurt that he has a hell of alot of smart people following him and discussing these things.

Oh man, they were so close to getting off.
