Welp

quote:

A portion of the new Amazon fulfillment center being built in Carencro has come down.

Photos shared with KATC shows a portion of the roof appears to have collapsed. It is unclear when the building sustained damage.

Witnesses in the area say that the job site is closed down and it appears that workers are not on site.

We have reached out to officials on the damage. Mayor Glenn Brasseaux says he is aware of damage but could not provide information.

According to Acadian Ambulance, no injuries were reported. "We didn't make it out there, they canceled us before we even got to that scene so there must have not been any injuries."

Carencro didn't nearly get as much rain as lafayette did last night.

Whoopsies.

Just speculating but maybe some temporary shoring for the tilt walls was not in place or a roof drain or scupper clogged up/was incomplete.

Water is very heavy in quantity.

It was still under construction? I mean, unfinished buildings aren't as structurally stable as completed buildings. That's why you carry builder's risk insurance. I don't think Amazon had anything to do with that as much as the contractor and architect, but storm damage happens on construction sites sometimes.

There was exceptionally heavy rains and high winds there yesterday. And more than likely, it's a cut/paste design that may not be optimized for Louisiana's violent weather.

I bet there was roof damage in a lot of other buildings in south Louisiana too.

In NOLA, we have workers on site so the collapse can come down on them. Get with the times, Carencro.

I try not to go under those big gas station canopies during a deluge. Have seen too many of those fail.

They used the NOLA building inspectors? They just phoned in approvals from several miles away?

Wouldn't the best time of year to build a big building like that be right after Hurricane season? Waiting until summer to build was stupidity at the highest level. Did they go to Latoya for building advice?

I've lived in St landry parish and then lafayette for most of my life.

I know that carencro is literally on the outside of the northside of town down 49.

Lafayette still got more rain. You can be half a mile to a mile off distance wise and get differences in inches.

This.

Took my wife over an hour to get back from her son’s house in the Crow, due to being detoured. Normally takes her about a half hour.
