I watch movies solo 99% of the time and just use high quality noise cancellation headphones. The best way, really. You can hear everything, even background dialogue you’d miss otherwise.

I last went to an actual movie theater in 2018 and have no plans to ever go to one again.

Not because of Covid, but because new movies suck arse.

Unless the sound is specifically mixed for headphones there is a lot lost in translation. A high-quality surround sound system properly implemented* is so much more of an immersive experience than with headphones. The sound mixes are designed to use both direct and reflected sound and no headphones are capable of reproducing the visceral impact of a good subwoofer system.

* the vast majority of home systems are poorly implemented. For example they rarely have any attempt to control reflections and the sub systems almost always have huge problems with cancellation. You can do a really good him setup for not a lot of money of you are willing to do the research and work, the alternative is to hire a GOOD professional. It really helps to have a dedicated room where the spousal acceptance factor is a non-issue (or you have a 6 digit budget). Being able to control ambient light, and properly sound treat the room makes an incredible amount of difference.

Its really a teenagers domain.

Which is why Hollywood has geared their movies toward them.

Family of four isn't spending over $50 at the movies when they have our modern TVs at home and instant streaming.

I hope so, F them or lower their prices... although I do miss on days off if the lineup is good, timing my way to go watch 2-3 movies for the price of 1. After 1st show is over, take a leak and walk into next one

A big part of the reason for this is the movie studios generally take up to 90% of the ticket money so concessions is where the theater has to make their money.

Its all concessions and really all popcorn. $10 for a bucket of popped kernals?

$5 for Red Vines that cost a $1 at the store?

$6 for a 7-Eleven hot-dog?

Large popcorn and large drink is definitely double the ticket price. Night showing with popcorn and soda is $25. For one person.

There will always be those select movies that have to be seen on the big screen. But there aren't enough of those to have as many theaters as there once was.

I think the "Cadillac" theaters are the way to go. We have one that has the recliner chairs that allows you kick up your feet like a recline. They are wide and comfortable. If you get in early they have it set up to play interactive games on your phone. The Concessions aren't cheap, but they have more than just popcorn and coke. I also like the fact that you can order your tickets online and even pick your seat.

Even with such upgrades, I like being able to pay for in house streaming so it needs to be a helluva of a flick to get me in a theater.

This in a nutshell for me. Adult ticket prices at $10+ and the absolutely ridiculous concession pricing has kept me away from heading to a cinema for years now.

Last time I went with just the wife and I, it was just under $50 for 2 tickets and a couple boxes of popcorn and 2 sodas to wash it down.

Yeah, yeah, I know, don't buy the concessions-----but that to me is also part of the movie at the cinema experience.

Now I just stream movies at home, pop my own popcorn and wash it down with an ice cold beer or cocktail while sitting on my sofa.

I've heard of pimped out home theater set-ups. As someone who thinks surround sound is neat but not really worth the set-up, I don't really know what is considered "pimped out" these days. What is considered a top quality home theater these days?

this is not pimped out, but we have a 60 inch 4k and a soundbar. i am not acting like it's amazing or anything, but outside of a major blockbuster, i'm very happy with it and it was all less than 1k.

i have done my best to help out the theaters, but tbh it just isn't worth it. since covid i've seen:

invisible man
hunt
Tenet
Croods
Raya
Nobody
Wrath of Man

there's not a movie on there that i would say was really that enhanced on the big screen. maybe tenet, but i didn't have any problems with the audio, unlike most. between prime, netflix, d+, and HBO there's something new every single week for us to watch as a family. with the bigger tv, a soundbar, $.50 popcorn, my liquor cabinet, and the ability to pause, it's just hard to beat.

the last movie that was a "must-go" was Endgame, and while i'm not going to pretend that Endgame is high art, it was a truly great movie going experience. Nothing i know of coming up even remotely gets me 1% hyped as it did.

last time I went to the theatre it was cold out, so i wore my big jacket. drove through CFA on the way for me and the wife. Put a chicken sandwich in each pocket, she kept the CFA sauce in her purse. Fries spilled a bit but we didnt care.

Ate like kings.

Brought flask of jack daniels, dumped it in giant diet coke, got 2 straws.

We had a good time. Couldn't tell you what the movie was.

From a personal perspective, I like the option of being able to go to a theater or being able to stream it at home. I don't think it ought to be an either/or situation.

Generally speaking, I find people at theaters horrible...but I do like the experience of a theater. It would be nice to be able to do either.

That’s false. A well run multiplex is covering at least 90% of their operating expenses with box office revenue and concessions are pure profit for them.

That's nothing new. People have always aged out of being the core theater audience. Some age back in once they get closer to retirement.

my lack of desire to support Hollywood liberal elites has driven me away. Although watching from home and paying for streaming platforms is still somewhat being supportive of the movie industry, I don’t have the feeling that I’m being raked over the coals financially to support them.
This is a rationalization for your aging out of the core audience. No one is striking a blow against Hollywood by placing their money in Hollywood's right hand instead of its left hand.

Doubt it. I think there's still a pretty big romanticism about going to the theaters, and frankly there are a lot of movies that are just better viewed at a theater.

I'd guess they're going to stop going direct to streaming in the near future.

agreed. i don't like hollywood's politics as much as anybody, but most of hollywood is just a bunch of people trying to earn a living.

saying i don't want to support liberal elites and then watching entertainment in any form is pretty counterintuitive.

Isn't that basically what I said? I said the concessions is where they make their money, you are saying the ticket sales cover up to 90% of their operating expenses and the concessions are profit. I'm not seeing the difference

Well that's the point, they make no money off the movie.

Roger Ebert who lived his life in theatres said its all popcorn.

My local one banned bags and purses saying basically you have contraband.

Theatres will always exist if you offer good food and beer and wine and make it a dining worthy night.

But $50 for stale popcorn and a soda? When we have so many other Friday Night options including always home? No thank you.
