FEMA rules may require more than 1,800 East Baton Rouge Parish homeowners to elevate their homes or sell them to the government for demolition because of the 2016 floods — but Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome isn't identifying who they are yet.

The city-parish was preparing to send out letters informing the residents of their situation, but Broome said on April 30 that those letters were on hold. That announcement came days after Livingston Parish leaders told 1,221 residents about the same problem, drawing an outcry from shocked homeowners.

“We need another weeklong study, with catered meetings of course, to figure out how to get more 10 cent envelopes. The study will cost 1.5 million dollars.”

I hate to say this but my Gf (now wife (No pics)) was living in Denham Springs during the 2016 flood and her house got 5.5' of water.

Before we started rebuild/renovating we looked at the FEMA site and it specifically told people if you got over 50% damage and your house elevation is under the 100 year flood plane then you will have to raise your house to rebuild!

50% Rule

We raised the house with the money FEMA was giving at the time and only cost her about 5k.

Well worth it after selling it in 2018!

People and local governments knew of this rule but decided to ignore it, now it's coming back to bite them..

How does a government office only have 100 envelopes and no access to more? Idiotic

We making rules for a once in 500 years disaster event now? Seems unreasonable

It’s amazing that we allow this. Insurance companies want you sending that monthly check but don’t want to assume any risk. We allow it so we deserve it.

shift the heavy rains from 2016 a little more west, and the burbank area gets destroyed. the flood waters in burbank area were from back water through amite, manchac, and then bayou fountain/Ward's Creek.

if that rain dumped into the bayou fountain/Ward creek drainage area, then it would of had no where to go and flooded all near those areas....

go look at the LSU flood maps for EBR, nearly all the older areas west of highland are blue.....

History will bite you in the arse if you are not careful. The area of Burbank south of Gardere was once sugar cane fields. The area between Gardere and Lee Dr. was a swamp. The corner at Burbank and Nicholson was an oil field. At flood stage the Mississippi river still tries to find its ' outlet at the Vet school to get into Bayou Fountain, an ancient distributary of the River.

When the Comite Diversion Canal is completed isn’t the base flood elevation going to change for a lot of people? The flood maps would have to be redrawn.

The government should not be in the business of insuring homes or paying for them to be lifted. 30 trillion in debt and rising….

Wouldn't this apply to every single business in Denham Springs too?

I'd LOVE to see a revitalized Florida Blvd BUT that will never happen and it's sad. The flood offered a huge opportunity for improvement and they missed a lot of it.

I am fortunate I never flooded.
My house is 3” above BFE and 1/2 my yard is an AE. Go to the other side and out of Flood zone.

If someone said they could raise my house 2ft for $10k I could consider it.

2016 was bad and Monday night brought back the reminder that I got lucky in 2016. I did not flood in either rain storm. It getting too close for comfort.
