Works for the flu, but not covid
Record "lows", but lets still plug product
No other alternative hypothesis for this abberant data???

Flu Has Disappeared Worldwide during the COVID Pandemic
The public health measures that slow the spread of the novel coronavirus work really well on influenza
By Katie Peek on April 29, 2021
quote:
Since the novel coronavirus began its global spread, influenza cases reported to the World Health Organization have dropped to minuscule levels. The reason, epidemiologists think, is that the public health measures taken to keep the coronavirus from spreading also stop the flu. Influenza viruses are transmitted in much the same way as SARS-CoV-2, but they are less effective at jumping from host to host.
Works for the flu, but not covid
quote:
As Scientific American reported last fall, the drop-off in flu numbers was both swift and universal. Since then, cases have stayed remarkably low. “There’s just no flu circulating,” says Greg Poland, who has studied the disease at the Mayo Clinic for decades. The U.S. saw about 600 deaths from influenza during the 2020-2021 flu season. In comparison, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there were roughly 22,000 deaths in the prior season and 34,000 two seasons ago.
quote:
ecause each year’s flu vaccine is based on strains that have been circulating during the past year, it is unclear how next year’s vaccine will fare, should the typical patterns of the disease return. The WHO made its flu strain recommendations for vaccines in late February as usual, but they were based on far fewer cases than in a common year. At the same time, with fewer virus particles circulating in the world, there is less chance of an upcoming mutation, so it is possible the 2021–2022 vaccine will prove extra effective.

Do viral strains compete against each other?

"Why is there no flu?"
"We wore masks."
"Why didn't that work on corona?"

Ain't that peculiar?
Since COVID is definitely NOT a really bad flu strain *winkwink*, but it wiped out the flu, huh?
Weird.

I swear some of you have the medical knowledge of a turnip. You can't confuse a Coronavirus for an Orthomyxovirus. The capsid is radically different, the spike proteins are radically different, and the nuclear material is entire the other way around and doesn't share much in its sequence.

Just to be clear though, why do you think Flu rates are 'down'?

It's a miracle!
ETA - Not to mention, it's almost as if any regular flu strain would trip a generic coronavirus test, since you'd be much more concerned about that than just the plain ol' flu during a pandemic. Why, that would send coronavirus cases through the roof!

Don't you see how many more people would have died if we weren't wearing masks? Millions!!!!!!

Because the viral loaded needed for infection from the flu is higher, the window for infection is lower, the immune system is better equipped to fight the flu. The list goes on and on, but my guess is that nothing I say will change your mind. My M.D. is probably worthless to you.

One hour after Biden inaugurated, WHO changes COVID testing criteria
The change is expected to lead to a reduction in COVID case tallies.
Fri Jan 22, 2021 - 6:13 am EST[/quote
[quote]In what some have suggested is politicized timing, the World Health Organization on Wednesday changed the protocol for COVID-19 tests, which will result in large reductions in the numbers of positive cases. The body took this action just one hour after Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States. On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued guidance regarding the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, which is being widely used across the globe in order to detect cases of COVID-19. In a short information notice, the WHO referred back to an instruction booklet for COVID testing, released in September 2020, noting that “careful interpretation of weak positive results is needed.”
Clown world..
quote:
The guidance warned against diagnosing someone as having the virus just because he tests positive if he does not present with symptoms of COVID-19. It also warned about the high risk of false positives: “The cycle threshold (Ct) needed to detect virus is inversely proportional to the patient’s viral load. Where test results do not correspond with the clinical presentation, a new specimen should be taken and retested using the same or different NAT technology.” “As disease prevalence decreases, the risk of false positive increases. The probability that a person who has a positive result (SARS-CoV-2 detected) is truly infected with SARS-CoV-2 decreases as prevalence decreases, irrespective of the claimed specificity,” the WHO continued. An even more surprising admission followed: the document described PCR tests merely as an “aid for diagnosis” and did not place any greater weight upon the results of PCR tests. “Most PCR assays are indicated as an aid for diagnosis, therefore, health care providers must consider any result in combination with timing of sampling, specimen type, assay specifics, clinical observations, patient history, confirmed status of any contacts, and epidemiological information.”
The new guidance for assessing the results of PCR COVID tests effectively means that there are additional steps to be taken before reporting that someone has tested positive for the virus. The WHO notes that “a new specimen should be taken and retested” and further stipulates that “health care” workers should weigh up the test result alongside real-world information, such as symptoms or “clinical observations,” and contact with any other infected individuals.

Guest-Article by Howard Steen & Saji Hameed
quote:
PART 1 – BACKGROUND (HOWARD STEEN)
It seemed in January that the world was facing an impending epidemic caused by a deadly new virus and that a swift response based on inevitably limited data was of the utmost importance to avert a potential global catastrophe. One of the most important tools in this fight to detect, isolate and suppress the virus is the PCR test. The Charité Institute of Berlin led by Prof. Drosten was quick to recognise the extreme seriousness of the situation and developed the first PCR test protocol to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus in record time. This was simultaneously selected and recommended by the WHO and became the global first line of defense.
Eleven months into the pandemic we have now learned much more about the virus and the multitude of PCR test variants made possible by the Corman-Drosten protocol. Flaws in the test protocol have become increasingly clear and our review report addresses these tremendous concerns.
Additionally alarming, and especially pertinent to this argument, as the PCR test has impacted all levels of global society as perhaps no test has ever done before, are the unforeseen consequences caused by the rise in PCR cases. Over one hundred governments have used these results to apply unprecedented measures to control transmission; such as lockdowns which have irreparably impacted millions of lives and livelihoods and direct attacks on people’s basic rights and personal freedoms, further resulting in catastrophic damages for entire economies.
TPA speculation:
Many covid case were PCR false positives (inflating case numbers). Many covid cases could have been influenza if testing was not performed for influencza or priority was given to a a PCR test at an elevated cycle threshold calling covid.
Clinically, the patient with influenza would look very similar to a person with a mild covid case
The person interpretting the test would have a financial incentive (at an institutional level/reimbursement) to label the case covid over influenza...
The "ethical" way of skirting this would be setting up freestanding sites only searching only for covid...
Seek and you shall find...
To be clear: the virus and impact on some is not a hoax. The machinations surrounding it and policies are exploits

How would the flu levels "dropping to minuscule levels" affect the flu virus going forward. Could the levels ever get low enough to the point that it would be essentially non-existent?

For treating patients, no, but for conducting and reporting actual science...probably. An MD doesn’t automatically make one a good scientist.
Surely, you’ve read about viral interference by now, and looked at worldwide data trends for SARS 2.0, flu, other HCoVs, rhinovirus, etc. to see how they all virtually disappeared when SARS rates were high but rebounded when SARS cooled down?
Japan masks every year for flu, and I believe pushed hard for it in 2019. Why did it only work this past year?
Or how about in Brazil? Low CoviD mitigation implementation there and yet flu still disappeared:
fricking wild!
But it must be those masks!

Just want to insure I’m taking what you are saying correctly, as I am but a simple caveman. Are you saying the masks are why we are seeing virtually no flu?

Please. He's an M.D. And we all know medical doctors know not only medicine, but all forms of science, politics and even economics. Thank God they stepped in to run the country a year ago or imagine what a shitshow we'd have become.
