Reddit post from a guy that was thrilled about him:

I just want to let you guys know that you guys got an absolute stud and one of my favorite players in the draft. By that I mean Payton Turner was my 8th ranked player overall and edge 1, media didn’t know who he was because he played for Houston. He dominated though, he has size, explosiveness, power, bend, athleticism for his size, tested a hair better than Jaelen Phillips with a 99th percentile three cone which is the most important number for edge rushers, his was .18 seconds better than JJ Watts. Also for those who aren’t familiar with scouting edge rushers, a 6’6” 268 pound guy with great length who’s flexible and can really bend, is very rare, a guy that size with his athleticism is also very rare. A guy that size with his explosiveness, burst off the line, and effort is one of the rarest things in any draft. His tape against BYU was supposed to be his worst but he flashed absolutely dominant reps, he’s versatile and penetrated down the middle, he got a dominant sack against Brady Christensen, and there was one play where he was still on the line and managed to chase down a receiver in the open field and tackle him, passing DBs and other receivers and made the tackle. This is not my comp for him but I saw shades of JJ Watt.
He’s not just traits either, It’s on tape but he had a 91.7 true pass rush grade per PFF. 16.8% pass rush win rate, and a 10.4% run stop rate. Say what you will about PFF but their pass rush grades have been some of their best.

Payton Turner (98) reminds me a lot of
@camjordan94
, both in dimensions and on film. Played between 270-280 like Cam does, 35-inch arms so he sets a great edge with that length, and both had unreal hips for their size to flatten and finish.
Top 20 pick type of guy in my opinion.

He beat a pretty good tackle from BYU .. that's all I've got. Over and out.

I'm excited. Biggest wingspan for a DE in 20 years.
frick you Tom Brady.

I'm pretty optimistic about the pick. These athletic types are hard to be complete misses. Even if they are busts which is a risk for every single pick, they can still contribute. And I LOVE his effort and smarts. I have no clue if he will live up to his pick range, but I have a hard time seeing him not being a contributor at the very least. And if he works out we found an eventual "replacement" for cam which is a hard position to replace imo.

I take a very simplistic take when it comes to reacting to draft picks, and that is "I don't know what we have."
I'll wait to see how he does in camp and how he plays when the pads come on, and this goes for literally every pick.
Even someone like Trevor Lawrence isn't guaranteed to not be a bust. Overreacting because we didn't pick Mel's #16 prospect is stupid.

Starting to think this is Cam Jordan 2.0, but with more length.

Patriots took a DE at 21st overall a few years back. Had 10 sacks in three seasons in college at a G5 school. Surely our fans would’ve melted
That guy vs Turner’s measurements is parenthesis

His 3 cone and shuttle are really encouraging. Two drills that actually matter when evaluating DEs

You're a complete miss.
Read the thread title then GTFO.

Didn’t know anything about him prior to last night but I see one draft grade that has him as the top true DE in the class. A top 40 pick anyway. Not quite the reach I initially suspected.

The upside is there for sure. We'll see how it pans out. Looks like a boom or bust pick right now.

Sure, it happens. I'm not saying being athletic will automatically make you an NFL caliber player. You have to look at other factors in totality. But the upside of athletic ability is that they are more likely to be able to at least contribute if other areas of their game don't develop as expected. Take Davenport for instance. Many on here say he is a bust thus far which is fair, but he's still impactful.

Good second round pick.
Second guessers delight in the first round.

Just trade up and get Samuel, campbell, or Moehrig(good cover safety that can handle slot, PR can start on the corner) and then a LB in 3rd and everyone will be happy.
kid has potential and if you think of Cam's age, and Davenport's risk, not a bad pick.
