Earlier today, SpaceX and NASA successfully launched four astronauts into orbit on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. The launch went by without a hitch — but the crew of four did experience a scare while en route to the International Space Station when they were notified of a potential collision with an unidentified object. “The NASA/SpaceX team was informed of the possible conjunction by US Space Command,” NASA spokesperson Kelly Humphries told Futurism. “The object being tracked is classified as ‘unknown.'” There was no time, Humphries said, to perform an avoidance maneuver to get out of the way of the object. Instead, SpaceX advised that the astronauts put on their pressurized suits in case of a collision.

I hate websites that make you disable your ad blocker. I guess I'll never be able to view that link for myself.

SpaceX launches four astronauts on Crew Dragon flight to space station

Cliffs:
We think something is going to collide with you
Our bad, it is further than we thought
Odd because it is hard to fathom that they would make a mistake like this. Unless the intercepting object changed course (and was not in a fixed orbit...)

Further...
quote:
US Space Command spokesperson Erin Dick told Futurism that the Pentagon notified NASA of the potential collision at about 1:30pm EST today, about seven hours after the spacecraft launched.
“After further analysis, the 18th Space Control Squadron quickly determined there was no conjunction threat, all aboard are safe and the spacecraft was not at risk,” Dick said.

So they don't say how big it was, how fast it was going, and what path it was on?
I wonder how small of an object they can detect?

You buying that?
Perhaps...
Seems like a pretty big “our bad” given the degree of urgency described

I listened to a program about this some time ago on BBC. They track 1000s of pieces of space junk down to the size of a coin. No surprise china blowing up stuff put a lot of it in orbit.
The shuttle was hit on more than one occasion, one piece the size of a pencil eraser cracked the windshield on one trip.
Im certain someone on here could post a pic of the stuff they track, its a wonder a rocket gets through it.

99.99999999% chance it was space junk. Your tin foil hat is wearing a tin foil hat to believe this was aliens.

AKA, put your helmets back on. Probably a miniscule piece of space junk that could potentially pierce the craft. Dumb thread is dumb.

SpaceX is putting a shitton of things up in space like their hundreds of star link satellites so could be something of theirs for all I know. Space junk is a huge and ever growing problem for sure.

I'm not advocating this at all but if a group of people wanted to destroy big tech, MSM, social media and world government efforts, starting a chain reaction of space debris would be a sure fire way to do it. It would push communication tech back 100 years and keep it that way for at least a century.

Where is SpaceForce when you need ‘em?

It’ll happen sooner or later. China destroying that satellite sent thousands of pieces of junk into erratic orbits and only a matter of time before another satellite gets hit and chain reactions occur making space flight unattainable.

100 years? Nah. Radio frequencies would still work. LOL at you dorks without a HAM license.

There’s so much junk orbiting the earth that I’m surprised we don’t have Saturn like rings.

Not sure why there's sarcasm here. If some space trash breaches the hull the cabin may depressurize/lose oxygen. Having a space suit would be handy in that scenario.

This same BBC program spoke about a prototype satellite that had an arm and a net on it to collect space debris.
No doubt some project some nephew came up with and the US govt gave him millions.
