Why do coaches not bunt in late game situations?

I am not a fan of bunting in general. But sometimes, the situation dictates it. Both teams had 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 9th. Neither team bunted. Neither team scored. These coaches have forgotton more about baseball than anyone on this site, but what is their thinking in those situations? Bizarre.

I think the announcers nailed it.

Its just not something they're good at.

They are afraid of the nerd patrol and their don’t bunt charts.

Sometimes it depends on the player. Sometimes it depends if you are playing for one run or multiple runs. Bunting isn’t as prevalent as it once was and when pitchers K players it doesn’t matter anyway.

Its not easy to get a bunt down when you never do it

Well they need to practice it. Not in BP where anyone can get it down. But off live pitching or bullpens with real velo so that it’s game like.

Metrics point toward it being a lower percentage move. Players have higher K rates. Realistically, bunting with your middle of the lineup at bat with no outs and a lead isn’t something I think many coaches would do these days. Probably aren’t many players perfecting the craft anymore either tbh.

Sacrifice bunting is the only play in any sport that both teams clap when it is done. I’m not a fan of giving up outs especially with this team that isn’t a good contact hitting team to begin with.

It’s weird because classic baseball strategy was to bunt. Then analysts started running the math on the statistics and discovered that bunting lowered your chances of scoring. Circumstances will always help determine it. If we have a low average, non-slugger, at the plate, but he’s great at bunting, and he’s fast, then hell, go ahead and bunt.

Because they're not taught and forced to learn how to bunt. Most players don't want to bunt....who's driving the bus?? Obviously, not the "coaches." Bunting is an important aspect of the game at "situational" times.

Bingo
PM for one doesn’t push the bunt. He doesn’t demand every batter be able to do it. You can see that when he does call for a bunt mist guys are terrible at it.

Remember Vandy? They could bunt very well. So some coaches demand it and some do not.

I can't remember the last time I had any confidence in our ability to execute a bunt properly. Most of these guys were rarely called upon to bunt in high school, and it does not appear that they have mastered the art in college. I wonder how much time we spend on bunting in practice.

Pinch hit the player and put someone in that you have confidence in. Having your team not ready to bunt is a coaching issue.

I seem to recall UCLA win the CWS a few years ago playing small-ball. I hated to watch it but it worked for them.

most college players suck at bunting because they likely don't spend much time learning how to do it before they get to college. If you don't get the bunt down correctly, all it accomplishes is one more out without advancing the runners. Bianco learned how to coach from Skip. Skip didn't bunt either. If you've watched us bunt over the last decade, it's been very hit or miss (more times miss honestly) whether we execute them properly.
