Question About Whiplash Ending

Was Fletcher trying to provoke Andrew to tap into greatness or was it a miscalculation by Fletcher in his plan to humiliate and ruin Andrew?
Seems to me like Fletcher’s m.o. in life was to inspire greatness no matter the cost. I kind of believe he knew all along Andrew had the ability, and just wanted to bring the entire weight of the world crashing down on Andrew so as to push him beyond the limit we’d seen so far. Even if Fletcher hated Andrew for helping to get him removed from Schaffer, his desire to discover greatness was more powerful than revenge.

More importantly: how did Andrew take it when Fletcher told him “not quite my tempo” after that blazing drum solo?

It was to utterly humiliate him for causing him to loose his job.

This is actually a really good question.

Thought this was pretty evident. Fletcher basically says this exact thing.

I think his intent at the end was strictly to humiliate Andrew. I don’t think it was a machination to bring out the greatness in him.
But once Andrew started his “frick you” solo, Fletcher realized that the greatness was coming out and got on board.
That was my take at least.

Exactly. Fletcher wanted to destroy the kid's soul by making him look like a fool. By doing so, Andrew managed to tap into the talent that Fletcher knew he had dwelling inside of him. But it was completely unintentional on Fletcher's part. He just took advantage of what happened.

100% this was intended. What Fletcher did was fricked up and there’s no doubt he wanted to make a fool of Andrew but he truly just wanted the next Buddy Rich and when he saw Andrew killing it, he knew not to get in the way and was just happy to witness it

I think he was just a bit crazy when it came to greatness. Joe Jackson style basically. Maybe not that brutal

This is 100% correct IMO. He was an a-hole, first and foremost. And he had to be in control of his students. Once he had accomplished that he could essentially do what he wanted to them...if they faltered it was because they were weak, couldn’t cut it, and didn’t have what it takes. If they excelled it was because he had pushed them to be great. So either way he got the glory, whether it's weeding out the bad ones or molding the great ones.
In the end though, he was strictly trying to put Andrew down once and for all. He recognized his talents but didn’t respect them. It was only when Andrew fought back with his “No, frick YOU” solo that he actually respected his greatness and rode that wave during the performance.
ETA: I recently watched this again and it still holds up really well and is as good as I remembered. Fantastic movie.

Funny, I was thinking about this exact question the other day.
Oh, he wanted to humiliate him. He also wanted to humiliate him in front of a large audience to make sure that he never works in music again.
I like to think that he got on board only temporarily. That they had a rivalry for the rest of their lives.

Good question by the OP, but this is pretty much what I was going to say. I think he wanted to humiliate him at first but when Andrew basically said frick you and started bringing out his greatness when he found out what Fletcher was doing, Fletcher just kind of said screw it and went along with helping him shine, which was what he always said he wanted to do.
This truly is one of my favorite movies though. One of the few I've ever seen that's absolutely perfect beginning to end.

Thought it was evidently to tap into greatness. Hence the Charlie Parker allegory.

I always thought this was very clear.
The closeup of the eyes at the end tells the story.

After that, the JVC show stunt was nothing but a ploy to absolutely bury the punk that got him fired.
Going that far was what finally drew out an amazing performance, I guess Fletcher had been too soft on his students before then

He meant to humiliate him, but recognized greatness and respected the greatness that fuels his passion and let all else go in the moment.
His passion>>his ego
His passion>>his ego

I don't agree with this. I believe Fletcher's m.o. was to always be the smartest/most talented person in the room. Whatever by-product of that occurred was merely happenstance.
