Anyone know if it’s possible to rehab a liver by quitting or greatly reducing alcohol intake ?

So you are looking for an excuse to keep drinking? Just stop if it's giving you liver problems. Of course it's bad

I don’t drink much. Maybe 1-2 days a week on a limited basis

Kind of a weird question. Do you have liver disease or something?

The liver is unique in that it's the only organ in the body that is able to regenerate. You can literally drink until your liver is 75% destroyed and it will heal itself. However, if you damage it beyond that point it's game over.

Beside alcohol, there’s other substances that can damage the liver right?

Well, sure. Drugs addicts, smokers and people with bad diets can have liver issues.

In my ICU days we got 1 or 2 cases of acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose every year.Sometimes intentional, sometimes accidental.People would get sick, take acetaminophen for fever, aches and then also take cold preparations such as NyQuil or
Alkaline Seltzer Plus ( also contain acetaminophen.)

Tylenol certainly does. As far as recreational drugs you'd have to google it. Not sure which ones do and don't.

48 hours with a suppository of St. John’s Wort.

Disclaimer. Not a medical professional but did stay at Holiday Inn Express within the past 6 months.

If you (or your friend) think you have serious liver problems that need ‘rehabbing’ you should probably be asking your doctor questions and not the HF board.

yes to a certain extent, but you have to first identify the problem and fix it. Tuduca and Uduca help over the counter but talk to a fricking doctor and see a behavioral therapist if you are not able to fix the issue yourself.

Shouldn’t need to be outside of abnormal health issues. My understanding is that your liver is one of the resilient and regenerative organs you’ve got.

+1

Health and Fitness board can give you some good advice, but I wouldn't let this be the area in which you put your faith in the internet, even a small community like this.

Tell your friend/family they need to see a reputable doctor and do what they say. We aren't doctors.

This. The only thing that will inhibit regeneration of liver tissue is scarring, which is frequently caused by cirrhosis. Once you get to that point, it's over.

I honestly thought the lungs healed themselves also? Like when people quit smoking and get an x-ray of lungs years later they are cleared up many times.

You people are fkn retaredrd. 1) how do you know he hasn’t talked to a doctor 2) I’m sure there are doctors that post here 3) what’s the matter with someone posting here about a health matter? Maybe he’s thinking outside the box and wants to get a general consensus......
