Paid you too much and we need it back?

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever heard of it being a thing department wide or in multiple departments? Like weeks to months later coming back and saying we paid you too much?
Messing with peoples pay is not confidence inspiring.
And they are trying to act like it’s no big deal.
Really I guess they don’t have a choice but to act like it’s normal

You didn't know how much you were supposed to make?

Why can’t they just make the adjustment moving forward?

Tell them you worked too hard as well.

It happens. Be grateful for your interest free loan.

Unemployment sent me a letter saying they overpaid me and I need to recompense them. How exactly does that work itself out?

We talking a hundo or two or an amount that is very noticeable? If the latter, surely you knew they were going to come for it and should've known to set it aside or, better yet, contact your employer right away so you don't have to carry the burden of waiting for them to catch it. If it's only a hundo or two, I'd tell them I didn't notice and spent it.

I knew exactly how much my unemployment was supposed to be.

A military friend received a letter from DFAS indicating he was overpaid in X year and repayment would be deducted over the next year.

I’ve seen it happen and they took it out in installments of the employees X number of checks. I don’t know the exact amounts, but I estimate that they were paid about $800 - $1000 too much and took back about $100 a month. One of the employees quit and they threatened to send it to a collections agency, but I don’t know how it ended up.
This was with a huge global company so I assume it was cleared by legal.

Define departments.

I was the beneficiary on my Dad’s retirement plan. After he passed, they sent me a check that was apparently too much. They called me and sent me letters saying I needed to pay $X back to them. It’s been 11 years and I guess they gave up?

I lost the money in a boating accident.

A couple of years ago I got an email saying that my expense report showed that I’d over tipped by 7 cents and if I didn’t repay the business office within a specific number of business days they would consider docking my pay.

Happens to hookers all the time.

I once got paid 13,000 instead of 1,300. Someone in payroll imput an extra zero by mistake. Example: 13560 instead of 1356.
I noticed it when I went to the bank to deposit the check, it was back in the day before direct deposit.
I notified our branch business manager and they had a corrected check overnighted to me from company HQ in Houston.
A few days later I got an email from the CFO thanking me for my honesty and apologizing for an inconvenience.
