Syracuse 2-3 zone question?

This honestly is a dumb question but realistically, what are the hardest aspects of having to deal that type of defense? Is it harder scheme to implement in BB?
They've bit teams in the arse especially in the tournament settings.
Just asking for the BB folks for knowledge.

It's a long, active and athletic zone, lots of pressure and traps. There really is only one way to attack it.

Their 2-3 is more like a matchup and it has rules that Man teams use. Teams don’t see it so they don’t know what sets to run on it
You can’t run a single high vs it because they switch and sag. You can’t just pass against it because they guard you like man on wings
It’s a blend that was born out of bad defense and depth and it became gold. Boeheim was strict man guy until the 96 team had injuries

Thanks. It's always been brought up but never got the technical parts of it. They did a stellar job vs MSU in 2018 and couldn't get into any flow offensively.

They do a really good job funneling the offensive attack into where THEY want it to go, rather than the offense dictating the possession. They recruit long, athletic bigs to run the back line of the zone as well.
If you're old enough to remember, it's similar to Tarkanian's "amoeba" defense with Stacey Augmon at UNLV in the early 90s.

People on TV act like it’s impossible to score against but Syracuse always loses a shite ton of games soo

There's actually two ways to beat it, work inside out like West Virginia is trying to do and not succeeding. Or catch fire and bomb it from three. The second way is a trap that Boeheim wants you to try. Before you know it, you're 3 of 15 from three and down by double digits.

The amoeba was a thing of beauty when they ran it. The best thing about the 1-1-3 was they had the foot speed to close out the skip passes.

In some ways it’s like the option in CFB. So few teams run it no that other teams aren’t used to it when they see it.
Also, as someone mentioned, they use a kind of match up 2-3 so it’s not a strict zone.

How is Jim Boeheim even still coaching?
He’s had to vacate wins in FIVE different seasons.
But oh no Will Wade is still coaching so LSU is a joke.

It's sort of like the triple option. Teams don't see it often and it is difficult to prepare for on short notice. That's why Syracuse often overachieves in the tournament.

That said, it can be a tough matchup for teams when played well with right personnel.

WVU is beginning to figure it out. Hitting 3's generally solves all offensive problems.

Same reason Dana O’Neil wrote a love letter to Rick Pitino yesterday in The Athletic. Media people are kind to media subjects who are nice to them.

Teams in college rarely face a zone throughout the season. Zones, especially Syracuse’s zone who is active are designed to take opponents out of their offensive flow; forcing them do something they usually don’t do all season long. That is why it is difficult to play against when you don’t face it all season long.

I've had to watch the Syracuse zone at UW the past few years after Hopkins was hired and I hate it. I don't know what the average stats are, but the zone gives up so many offensive rebounds that I feel like the opponent gets 15-20 more FG attempts per game, so the margin of error is so slim.
Looking at the box score today, Syracuse had 52 attempts and West Virginia had 70. Against SDSU they had 47 versus 67 for SDSU. They just happened to be on fire shooting both games. When you have a bad offense, the team looks like UW did this year.

If your bigs suck in the back of the zone, it can be a problem.
