I want to see Morgan at SS

On the broadcast last night they quoted CPM as starting that Morgan could play SS if he threw right-handed.
The whole “no lefty SS/2B/3B/C” is a dogma that I’ve always wanted to see challenged and Trey has the exact type of athleticism to pull it off.
ETA not advocating for Thompson to be benched just would love to see this tried

What has Thompson done at SS to suggest we need a different one?

Nothing; give him a midweek game off or just swap around the infield

That’s why I always hated baseball as a left hander. Being too damn athletic to just be standing on first base for something I have no control over.
Better pitchers, better finishers in basketball, better tennis players, better boxers.

What about the advantages of being a lefty over right handed players? Throw mid 80s with some control, you are a college baseball player. You also have first base, plus 3 OF positions. Forgive me for not feeling sorry for lefties.

I want Shakira to tongue my balls.
See? Everybody can do it

A left hander should be able to play 2nd due to the better range up the middle, similar to a right hander at SS. They are literally opposites of each other. Or 3rd, because the range to cover the line is more with the glove in your right hand.
It’s another ridiculous “rule” that exists in sports. Someone will eventually challenge the norm....

A left handed SS isn't throwing anybody with just average speed out on a ball hit to the third base side. Same goes for a second baseman on a ball hit up the middle. You are asking them to catch a baseball and then adjust their body in a way that takes times. How many of those plays do you see being bang bang already? The answer is a bunch. Put a lefty in those situations, and those runners are safe at first at a MUCH higher rate.
It's the reverse for balls up the middle for a SS, and balls hit towards first for a second baseman for right handers, but in those situations they are moving closer to first and not away, which is the situation for a lefty.
It's not some "rule" as you say. It's done for very valid reasons.

It’s not just some tradition that righties only man infield positions. There’s a valid reason. Lefties would have to turn to get in a throwing position on every throw to first, including routine ground balls. Righties are already in a throwing position on everything except balls up the middle. It’s why the rules of baseball have first base where it is. If you flipped it, and third base was first base, all infielders would be left handed. There are more righties in the world, which is why it makes sense the way it is. It’s also the reason catchers aren’t left handed. There are more right handed hitters that would obstruct a throw from a left handed catcher.

We have some dumb football fans on this board but when it comes to baseball I don't know why I even bother spending any time on this site

It has absolutely nothing to do with range. If you even used just a little common sense, this wouldn’t even be a conversation.

People like the OP have to be aware that they don’t know enough about baseball to make matter of fact statements. If it was proposed as a question, ie “why don’t more lefties play infield positions?”, it’d be much more respectable. At least then you would be trying to learn.

Christ. You all realize why LH players don’t play 3B, SS, or 2B at a higher level right? It’s not just some arbitrary rule that every team blindly follows. There’s a good reason why you don’t see it.

One of my sons was a left handed SS as a yute when our starting SS was injured. He did play 1B and all outfield positions and pitch. The disadvantage was the shifting of the feet necessary to square up for a throw.

Out of all the amazing left hand athletes playing baseball in the entire world you think none have played shortstop at a high level just because of some "tradition"?

They aren't coming back into this thread.

Oh man the Rant often has retarded threads, but this might top them all.

Agree 100% and you have to hear me out on this. Lefties make better short stops, period and here is why.
1- A ball hit at the SS can be played equally by both LH and RH players
BUT
2- A ball hit to the SS left side is MUCH EASIER PLAYED by a LH thrower. It's a more natural throw where the LH player does not have to turn their body.
And here's the kicker: ALL PLAYERS ARE TAUGHT TO HIT THE BALL UP THE MIDDLE. And this plays directly into the strengths of a LH thrower.
Clearly an advantage for lefty SS.
And finally,
3- A ball hit to the SS right side can be played normally with a body turn like for a RH SS playing a ball up the middle. If it's a ball far to the SS right side, the SS can play it like an easy RH SS double play - IE, flip it to the 3B who guns it to 1B. The 3B has the strongest arm on the team, so this is natural. The LH SS is already moving towards the 3B, so this is the easiest flip in baseball.
Baseball is still stuck in the 1900's, and like the "Opener" mod for pitching, the LH SS is the next evolution in the game coming.
