I don't know of a single person that has watched the show in the past 20 years, at least regularly. I don't get it.

It hasn't been relevant for years. It's almost as if they're keeping it on air out of spite.

Simpsons is one of FOX's most profitable shows in the ratings that matter (18-49) commercial demographic. Currently 911 is #1 and Simpsons is tied #2 with the 911 Austin show. If it immediately follows a tight NFL game, Simpsons could be FOX's top show of the week.
Also - its relatively cheap to make cartoons in the age of covid and voice actors are now equipped with home studios to record dialogue without leaving the house making salary negotiations super easy this time round. Harry Shearer can tape voices from his French Quarter home - takes only about 2hrs a week - and he gets paid $300k an episode.

That's astonishing to me honestly. I don't know literally anybody that has watched The Simpsons regularly (or even sometimes, as it airs) on TV in a decade and a half. And for whatever reason, I don't see current 18-30 year olds really watching or getting into it either. I mean, if those are the numbers then those are the numbers. But it's just really hard to believe.
And also, I think the Simpsons want to outlive South Park as the longest running animated show on TV. So as long as SP isn't cancelled (or T&M decide to stop), I think the Simpsons will keep going.

NYT needs to do an investigative piece on who these 18-49 year olds are who watch new episodes of The Simpsons.

I know it’s still going, but I have a hard time seeing South Park reach 30+ seasons.

South Park still has legs, but if Comedy Central goes the way of the other Viacom channels (MTV, VH1, etc.) and starts playing the same 3 shows ad nauseam all week, I foresee Matt and Trey negotiating a 100 percent transfer of all distribution (TV and streaming) to HBO.
Trey is worth $600 million and Matt is worth $700 million. One more major deal and they will be the first billionaire cartoonists since Walt Disney.

I wonder if they're still making them to keep padding the library for Disney plus. My 14 year old leaves the simpsons playing all day on her TV, even if it's background noise.

They are only 5 or so years away...it will certainly happen if Matt and Trey want to keep doing it.

I think there are PLENTY of episodes to pad the Disney+ library haha

Where will they find enough yellow skinned, four fingered voice actors to complete that many episodes?

The Simpsons actually appeared in The Tracey Ullman Show as shorts as early as 1987 before being picked up on fledgling Fox in 1989.
So, The Simpsons, in a recognizable form, has been around since the Reagan administration - specifically 1 week before the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

I still watch Treehouse of Horror every year and catch at least 5-6 other episodes mostly during football season. The last couple years have actually been pretty solid IMO.

I suppose I am the odd one out here. I have watched every episode since 1989 almost all of them within the week of first airing. It certainly isn't appointment TV for me anymore but I still enjoy the Sunday Fox animated shows for the most part. It certainly isn't as edgy as South Park but it has been with me almost all of my adult life and I usually get a chuckle or two out of each episode.

Damn.
That just made me realize how old the show is, and how old I am. Something I'm not keen on being reminded of
