I know a good bit of us may feel this way from time to time, but lately I’ve been feeling it more often. I’ll be 33 in August, and up to this point in my life, I feel like a lot of it has been a waste of time. Just missed opportunities and dumb-arse decisions. I know I’m still young, and there’s time to do better, but it just sucks knowing things could have been a lot better at this point in life. Anybody else feel this way? How do you deal with these unpleasant feelings?

Yes, I made more money as a 24yr than all my friends and parents.

Then became addicted to drugs for 10yrs.

I wasted a decade of my life. Makes me sick, but only can keep moving forward.

iF you're enjoying life, you ain't wasting time.

We are all replaceable, enjoy your time, not much we do outside the home matters in the long run.

Most of us waste most of our time. Unfortunately.

Kind of, but not really. My life has been crazy and I only know one other person who has had one similar to mine. My job allows me to work remotely to where I’m currently on the edge of the world in Alaska just for the hell of it. I understand the feeling, but I’m glad my life has been mostly fricking nuts and landed in dangerous situations that were a hell of a lot of fun. I’ve had 2 or 3 nights in the orient where I should have died.

man, I want to be uplifting to you, but 33 isn't "young" in many ways, especially regarding career.

I couldn't imagine anyone with kids feeling that way. They change things.

I wouldn't say I feel like it's been wasted completely but I know I've lost things and missed opportunities that will never come back. I try to remember things can always get worse, always be worse. It seldom works but it's something.

All the time, sometimes.

But then I hug my kids and realize if I’d taken the paths that might have led me to fortune I wouldn’t have had them, or the joy of getting to watch them grow up and be part of their lives.

And so I don’t even care.
I’ll be dust someday and no one will remember my name, but the fact that I got a chance to love and be loved in return is better than ignominious eternity.

And I DEFINITELY wouldn’t have said that 15 years ago

Worse.

I feel like I've wasted my wife's life and am setting my kid behind.

Stuck in a job with shitty pay and shitty hours but I'm struggling to change careers. No other industry respects my job experience, no other job in industry would have better hours, and I'm old enough (32) that I can't take a huge paycut for a few years without drastically altering our family's lifestyle. And my wife doesn't want to move for a few years, so I'm fighting everyone else in my same situation in this same small city for the shrinking pool of jobs, just trying to get my foot in somewhere.

I've got some regrets, but I can't do anything about them now.

What do you feel has been a waste? Dumbass decisions are just part of being human. Quit kicking yourself for them. Missed opportunities? Who hasn’t? But how do you know they’d have turned out well for you anyway? Of that you cannot be certain.

Life isn’t a waste if you’re content. You have to define success. But keep in mind, success is a matter of perspective and it’s always evolving.
