Black women have also been identified as the subgroup with the highest body mass index (BMI) in the U.S., with four out of five classified as either "overweight" or "obese." Many doctors have claimed that black women's "excess" weight is the main cause of their poor health outcomes, often without fully testing or diagnosing them. While there has been a massive public health campaign urging fat people to eat right, eat less and lose weight, black women have been specifically targeted.

Perhaps — just spitballing here — perhaps black women have been specifically targeted by public health campaigns addressing obesity because, as the author says earlier in the same paragraph, "Black women have also been identified as the subgroup with the highest body mass index."

Just a thought?

The next sentence is just *chef's kiss*:

This heightened concern about their weight is not new; it reflects the racist stigmatization of black women's bodies.

To be clear: The Scientific American is telling you that the most obese subgroup in the U.S. is black women, and that concern about the health implications of obesity — championed by folks like, say, Michelle Obama — "reflects the racist stigmatization of black women's bodies."

White bean privilege. Duh. I won't go into detail, but you can guess which demographic has fast food privilege.

Yep. From drug addiction to crime to homelessness to violence to dropping out of school to poor health: it's never your fault. You had nothing to do with your lot in life; society failed you.

Just wait until Bill Gates decides to starve people to death with fake meat made out of recycled 5.25" floppy discs.

People are going to get lean really quick.

I've often wondered why black women are so much heavier than black men when you assume they grow up eating the same food. It may be role modeling when young.
Black boys see black athletes on TV who are fit. Black girls see their mom and she's obese.

Fattest city in America - at one time - was San Antonio - largely hispanic.

And I'll stop right there and let everyone imagine the number of slim elderly hispanic women they've encountered.

It's a cultural thing, not a racial thing. God bless black people. If you want to eat the damned best BBQ you can put in your mouth or the most tamales and chirozo breakfast tacos and die at 65 instead of 80, that's your choice. And honestly, there's nothing wrong with that. I've known a number of jubilant black women who are overweight and they are immensely enjoyable people to get to know.

Personal choices are just that.

Man, I would stab someone right about now for a pork chop platter from my favorite southern black country spot.

It isnt genetics that makes someone fat.

Overeating and under exercising. And before some someone says "thyroid" its still basic math (yes thats racist too).

If you eat 1500 calories and exercise to burn off 2000 calories you will lose weight. It may take time but it is the only way.

If they don’t care about their health, why should I? Let them do what they want. Whites better stay out of it. No good can come from interfering.

It's all about freedom. But one problem. In the US if you are obese you get a big check from the taxpayers called 'disability.'

I am constantly amazed when I see a 400-pounder, and they have a baby, and may even be pregnant.

It is hard for me to imagine the mechanics, let alone the attraction, to make that happen?
