Not a plumber so I can’t attest if this is legit or not but I am seeing it go around. Hopefully someone else knows more about it. Hopefully it could help a few of y’all out there.

While a space heater, a hairdryer, or any heating mechanism can generally do the trick, if you don’t have any of those things handy to help you out of your frigid fix, you can simply pour saltwater down the drain to thaw your frozen pipes. Boil about a gallon of water and start pouring in salt until it no longer dissolves. Once you’re finished, toss that hot and salty water down the drain, where it will hopefully thaw out those pipes quickly

In general people are going to be more worried about frozen supply lines than drains. Besides a P trap, a drain should be pretty much empty to begin with.

Sewer pipes are not water supply lines

I'm trying to wrap my brain around how pouring hot water into drain lines will thaw out incoming water lines

I just sent something hot and steamy down the drain. Should be fine now.

Given that water softener regen water has a negligible impact on the biological process in the septic tank I doubt this would kill much of the biomass at all.

I think the author should stick to making soy lattes at his day job.

Maybe it's just me but the sheer absence of common sense in the comment regarding "pouring hot salt water down the DRAIN, to clear the water SUPPLY lines of frozen water" is overwhelming.

Probably not a septic system since the alkalinity levels are already in the low range, but a small community aerobic plant would be impacted by the saltwater if everyone in the community decided to do this.
