Why would someone illegally stream a game on network TV?

Because he doesn't have an antenna. This kid doesn't even watch cable when he's home, always defaults to streaming first like it's the only option.

He and his roommates didn't even know their condo they rent provided cable for months. Didn't even plug it in to find out. If that gives you any idea.

also think it's the effect of the politicization of sports. They've been infiltrating sports with social justice and political bullshite for 10-15 years now, and it's slowly pushed a lot of people away.

Some of it is definitely this. You also have the Kaepernick supporters boycotting the game. Both sides are pissed at the league

this is why the political bullshite in sports is going to rapidly lead to its decline.

it’s so short sighted be say “lol fine old white people don’t watch us who cares, you aren’t the targeted demographic”

but its dads who put games on for their sons, its dads and grandpas who take their daughters and granddaughters to games that builds and carries on the passions and fandom for sports teams. that is going downhill quick, and if current generations don’t “pass it on” there is nothing left but an accelerated decline.

I am amazed at how little of a shite my nephews and younger cousins give about sports, because their parents just aren’t watching it and they have so many more options for entertainment. And that’s on top of the white demographic with more disposable incomes having less kids as it is

What constitutes "streaming". For instance, I have YouTube TV (which is streaming) but watched the game on CBS via YouTube TV. Is the "streaming" mentioned here just directly from NFL.com or another streaming service?

Also, this might be interesting

quote:

Furthermore, because who doesn’t love more stats, check out the Top 5 most watched Super Bowls here:

1. 2015: 114.4 million – Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks (NBC)
2. 2014: 112.2 million – Super Bowl XLVIII: Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos (Fox)
3. 2016: 111.9 million – Super Bowl 50: Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers (CBS)
4. 2012: 111.35 million – Super Bowl XLVI: New York Giants vs. New England Patriots (NBC)
5. 2017: 111.32 million – Super Bowl LI: New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons (Fox)

It looks like in the early to mid 2010's the rating were exploding. Then, beginning around the 2017 season things started to plummet.

Perhaps, and this is just a working theory, political garbage became intertwined with sports people just enjoyed watching as a distraction from other aspects of life. Thus, making the product less enjoyable and viewing such less desirable. Regardless of your political leanings, maybe people just like watching a ballgame without having to be constantly inundated with political and virtue signaling messages

I realized my whole rant was “old man yells at sky”, but it’s sad because I’m not that old and I mainly just think it’s selfish as frick for current athletes (who already have made it and have their contracts) to actively help shut the door behind them for future generations of athletes

Definitely an odd year, but, within my circle of friends, people completely forgot about the game.

I didn’t remember until the day of.

Is it in your DNA to have absolute shite takes or what? Take away the TD that was the result of two bad PI calls before half, the Bucs still dominated. Refs were a non issue. KC O line on the other hand...

Clearly you didn't.

I get taking the contrarian angle, trust me. But you must have completely ignored all of the pregame stuff. Sure, the actual game itself wasn't sending some message, how could it? But you're juts arguing to argue if your claim is there was no pandering on Sunday.

This ongoing farce (aka "pandemic") has created a ton of apathy towards sports topped with a large dose of virtue signaling. Making the product as a whole less enjoyable...REGARDLESS of your political leanings.

When sports were shut down completely in March people were forced to go without. Like an addict being forced to quit cold turkey. At first it was unimaginable. Then, as time went on without the "drug" many started to realize they could live without the drug. The addiction was waning. So when the sterile, joyless environment of sports started to return people had already started the weaning process months before and the "new" version of the drug didn't really seem to provide the same "high" as it once did.

This is a sports board. I'm on it because I love sports. I'm sure that is the same for you. But 2020 was the most apathetic I've been about sports in my entire life...and that hasn't changed even though the calendar has. It's not because I don't want to love sports again. It's that this joyless version doesn't give me much...well...joy.

Too big to fail mentality. When your revenue goes up every year it's easy to convince yourself your making all the right moves. The NFL has completely destroyed it's brand the past decade. The decline is kicking in hard. The league is still obviously going to be huge but contracting quite rapidly. Young people aren't into traditional sports and they've driven off all the old people

I am sure Scruffy will relate to this. For my entire life, Super Bowl Sunday has felt almost like a holiday. It was something you looked forward to. You spend most of the time leading up to the game watching old Super Bowl highlights on ESPN and spend all day in anticipation of kickoff.

I kept waiting for myself to feel these things Sunday and it never even came close to happening. I gave the dog a bath during the first half and got some work done in the second half when the game became a blowout.

Somewhere, the NFL lost me. I can't say exactly when or why, but I have an idea. The pandemic and reordering priorities has been a big part of it. The politicalization and forcing agendas has a lot to do with it.

And while there are a lot of good dudes in the NFL, there are also a lot of assholes that make it hard to support the product. The world and life itself are crazy things. If you had told me even 5 years ago that I wouldn't give a shite about the Super Bowl some day, I wouldn't have believed it.

And it looks like I am not alone.

You could also stream it for free on the CBS website. I sometimes have issues with antenna in bad weather. The AFC Championship game kept going in and out because it was storming here in Birmingham. So I had gone to my Smart TV browser ahead of time to figure out what I would need to do if the antenna wasn't pulling in a clear signal. Right there on the website was a link to Super Bowl, and when I clicked on that, there was a countdown and something about live stream available at a certain time.

This is exactly how I feel. I argue with my brother about this but he's basically in denial.

My apathy towards sports, in general, has been increasing for years as I have aged.

I used to watch every NFL game on Sunday and every college game on Saturday.

I’ve simply lost interest over the years.

I’m not sure it was even for any discernible reason. It just happened.

I think this year forced many people into a lightspeed version of that progressing mindset.

Sports aren’t that important.

Rivalries are dying, or they are dead.

Regional support isn’t really a thing anymore. Sports teams used to bring the people of a region together. It was a bonding mechanism.

Not so much anymore.

I think this year simply opened up everyone’s eyes to the concept that our current major sports leagues just aren’t very good products and they have been hiding behind this veneer of “fandom” for years.

People got a good look at what these leagues are like without fans and they are soulless.

This is literally when it began being noticeable for some folks.

I believe it as fact, rather than theory, as I began noticing it prior to 2017 specifically on ESPN, and Not during broadcasts...... now it has leaked into every aspect of the game including commercials, no one wants to watch that shite.

Our group, despite leaving the game on for background noise, stopped watching at half time.

Is there any sport where ratings have been good? Golf got out to a hot start as one of the first sports back, but the Masters got horrendous ratings. World Series and NBA Finals ratings were both horrendous. CFP Playoff was a disaster.

I think there are systematic issues here more than anything on the micro level. The pandemic is speeding up media trends that were already taking place especially in young people.

I think there’s something to this. It’s like the lack of sports in the Spring made people recalibrate what they watch or do in their free time.

There’s probably something to the argument that nobody wants to watch a sporting event where there is no crowd/spectacle.
