Trading a rifle for another rifle. Do I need a bill of sale for a trade?

My advice...keep what you have and buy the other. I traded 3 and sold 1 before I turned 30 and regret it now.

what are the rifles (and chambering) being traded ?

I’m thinking of doing the same thing and was curious about this as well

Personally, I would do a bill of sale (or call it an act of exchange or whatever you want to call it) and have the serial numbers of the guns identified. If something later happens with the gun you sold, I would want clear records to show that it was traded on such-n-such a date to so-n-so. But that's me and I'm extra cautious and anal retentive.

Yeah I’m gonna do one. Can’t hurt

make sure to file off the serial numbers on the trade-in in case the other guy uses it in a crime. Can't be traced back to you that way...

Never sell, never trade.

You don't need any of this crap. If Johnny law comes asking about your gun... first how the frick does he know it is your gun? You done messed up somewhere. Second, you simply say you don't have it anymore. You don't have to tell him where it went or what you did with it, there is NOTHING they can do. You are probably best off telling him as little as possible anyway, certainly better off telling him nothing verses establishing a paper trail of your gun dealings...

Need by law as long as both parties reside in the same state - No
Get one because you never know what our government will do with their list (we all know they have one) to make criminals out of normal citizens in the future.

Also check his drivers license to make sure he's in state and or not a prohibited person.

I personally just get the S/N ran of the gun I'm getting to make sure it's not stolen. I have police friends that can do this for me.

You do you bruh, but that seems like a bit of a naïve response. If the gun is registered or you did an FFL transfer on it, somebody somewhere has your name linked to the gun. Me personally, I would prefer to tell Johnny Law Enforcement when he comes knocking and telling me the gun was used in a double homicide that I sold it to John Smith on this date and here's the paperwork to prove it. But if you want to go with "GET OFF MY LAWN" approach, I'm sure that's gonna work out well for you. I'm sure the cops are going to just take "I don't have it anymore" at face value and go about their business.
