Pete Maravich Anniversary on Pardon the Interruption

The anniversary 51 years ago when The Pistol scored 49 points becoming the first college basketball player to ever score 3,000 points in his college career!
Might I add this was without a 3-point line when the games were 40 minutes long

Cool! Thanks for the post—didn’t know that was today.
Still downvoting for PTI, but not your fault.
How long are they now?

I was there for that game and every home game Pete ever played at LSU. that is why this crap we are forced to watch and try to support is so maddening
Pete was the GOAT in college basketball, and I was blessed to sit at half court for his entire career at LSU.

I went to games back then too and Pete was the only reason to watch LSU during that time. The teams he played on really weren’t that good. It was pretty much just watch Pete do his thing.

Aren’t they still 40 minutes long?
But to add to add to the OP, there was no 3 point line and I believe that there was no shot clock.

No...they changed it. The games are now only 38 minutes and 120 seconds long.

To the illiterate....no shot clock, no TV timeouts. Games could be long, 4-corner bs ala NC under Dean Smith type games. Hard to score how the Pistol did with that plus no 3-pt line.

Mentioning “40 minutes long” as they did on PTI after no 3-point line was just to ensure fans realized the games back then weren’t longer

There were only sixty minutes to an hour when Pistol Pete played.

It has nothing to do with being illiterate, dipshit. Game times are still 40 minutes. However, in real time, the games take about two hours now.

His freshman points also don't count towards his total as well also had no shot clock. Would be wild to see what he could have gotten to with a 3 point line and his freshman points counting in a faster paced game. Could have maybe gotten to an absurd 5000 points.

Some say that they looked at the footage and Pete would have averaged 8 three point shots per game. That would have put him over 52 ppg.
I remember seeing him dribble with 5 GA. players chasing him only to watch him throw up a hook shot from half court at the buzzer and make it. As Joe Dean would say, it's Sting Music from Athens GA.
The way the NBA games are today, looking more like scrimmages, Pistol would have a ball. Still very underrated player even though he is one of the top 50 NBA goat players.

Got to hold the 1970 Naismith trophy awarded to "Pistol" Pete Maravich.
The photo was taken last week, January 29, 2021, at Maravich's house in Covington, La
Much gratitude to Jackie and her husband, I really considered it an honor.
I am obviously an old fart and wasn't successful posting the photo. I'm open to instructions to learn how to post a photo if anyone cares to help out. Thanks
