My 8 year old son attended his first practice tonight. Was afraid to get on the mat at first but he eventually warmed up. He said after his first practice, his favorite thing was “learning to shoot.”

Pros? Cons? What to expect? Suggestions? I know nothing about wrestling. Not even the rules, so we’re both going in blind.

Just trying to find something different that he may enjoy.

ETA: He understands that elbow drops from the top bleacher is not legal

My kid is the Masked Marauder. He has a killer move off the top rope.

Cauliflower ear. Holding other boys in a tight enbrace. Nut sacks in the face.

It's a tough sport. Most of the wrestlers in our school were not the biggest or the strongest, but they were the toughest and best conditioned. A lot of them did cross country in the spring just to keep in shape.

Well they don’t let you starve yourself anymore to drop a weight class so life isn’t as miserable.

I owe a lot of my work ethic and character to the years spent wrestling. One of the hardest sports to condition for and practices are brutal but extremely rewarding .

I don’t yet but I didn’t start wrestling till 7th grade, that is/ was the youngest u could for school back then and I got whopped every day at practice by the other kid in my weight class mainly because he had been wrestling at the YMCA since he was like 4 he said, he was really good.
Man pisses me off thinking bout that little fricker, I remember he smiling at these girls this one time as he pinned me.

Edit for, start em young in wrestling

If it’s his “thing”, he’ll love it. Great sport. Good luck

The ringworm and cauliflower ear comments are pretty on point.

But so is this.

Its a great sport to be involved in. Easily better HS memories than football or baseball.

My son did it for a few years (8-12), great sport that will teach a ton.

1.) He will be in incredible shape
2.) It teaches mental toughness like no other sport. Win, on top of the world. Lose, it’s all on him in front of everybody.
3.) I started him in it because I wanted to get away from crazy soccer parents. Wrestling parents can be worse; I’ve seen parents coaxing kids to vomit in the bathroom to make weight.
4.) I always had my son wrestle at the next weight class so he could not worry about cutting, but that always made his matches a bit tougher

This. Being in a good wrestling program, and embracing it, can carry a person a long way.

I don't see the point in wasting your time on a sport like wrestling when mid south closed their doors years ago.

You in lake Charles or Sulphur? Wrestling at that age was the first time I remember going to Poche Town. Kyle Street Gym.
