I am currently planning a Colorado Mule deer trip next year with a buddy and I'm not sure what gun/caliber to take with me. I cant decide between my 6.5 creedmoor, 7 mag, 300 win mag, or a 33 nosler. The units we are looking to hunt are more open for good glassing and I am comfortable shooting out to 500-550 yards. If you had to pick one, what caliber would you take?

300 or 7. Flip a coin. This year we killed one with a 7, 300, 65 creed, and 300wsm

What type of hunting will it be? Driving around then spot and stalk or backpacking/ walking 10miles a day.
What weight is the rifles? Depending on the weight those calibers are so close that I would be more concerned about weight. At no point when I hunted Montana years ago did I ever wish I had more weight and it was not a ton of walking just lots of altitude changes.

I think we are going to do a lot of walking, getting up on ridges and glassing. The 6.5 is light has a 24" barrel, but the downfall is the bullet energy is only around 1200 ft/lbs at 500 yards. The 7 mag is light, but only has a 22" barrel. My 300 win mag is a little heavier with a 26" barrel. The 33 nosler is pretty heavy, but the ballistics are amazing.

Not a fan of the Cripplemore, but if it’s your lightest rifle take it.
My Muley rifle is a 257 WBY in a Mark V Ultralight.

Public land? Bring the lightest one, you're gonna be doing a whole lot of walking.

Is it that bad if you can't shoot past 400 yards? There's not that many situations where you couldn't take 2 guns, one for shooting the ridge 500 yards away and one for walking around. Its like hunting with a bow, at some point you have to have your max distance.

The nice thing about mule deer is often times the stalk is the best part of the hunt.

I would bring the 7mm mag and either the 300wm or 33nosler as a back up.

I would take the one I'm most accurate with, if that the 6.5 it will easily do the job at 900 yrs much less 500yrds. I know some one here who has never killed anything beyound 20yrds is gonna recommend a .338 or .300RUM.

A hammer, they are so damned dumb here you can walk up to trophy buck and knock em dead. Colorado must be the easiest state for primitive weapons. My neighbors harvest them regularly.
