re: DIY elk hunt CO unit 35

Looking at Unit 35, It really doesnt look like a good unit for Elk (especially archery). I would think this unit is better for mule deer because the terrain appears to be mostly open sage brush.

If you want to see the boats, you can anchor out in the lake by the mouth of the Tickfaw river. If you dont want to be on the water, you might be able to sit at gator den or Middendorfs.

I've been looking at these.. I wonder what the price will be, when they release them. My FIL has the Storm Optics Avenger which is very similar, but they are around $4,800.

What type of hunting will it be? Driving around then spot and stalk or backpacking/ walking 10miles a day.
What weight is the rifles? Depending on the weight those calibers are so close that I would be more concerned about weight. At no point when I hunted Montana years ago did I ever wish I had more weight and it was not a ton of walking just lots of altitude changes.

I think we are going to do a lot of walking, getting up on ridges and glassing. The 6.5 is light has a 24" barrel, but the downfall is the bullet energy is only around 1200 ft/lbs at 500 yards. The 7 mag is light, but only has a 22" barrel. My 300 win mag is a little heavier with a 26" barrel. The 33 nosler is pretty heavy, but the ballistics are amazing.

What distances were yall shooting?
Yeah I thought about purchasing a .243 just for this hunt. :rotflmao:
I am currently planning a Colorado Mule deer trip next year with a buddy and I'm not sure what gun/caliber to take with me. I cant decide between my 6.5 creedmoor, 7 mag, 300 win mag, or a 33 nosler. The units we are looking to hunt are more open for good glassing and I am comfortable shooting out to 500-550 yards. If you had to pick one, what caliber would you take?

Do you or anyone you know have a rifle chambered in a 7mm WSM? I got two boxes of the Hornady Precision hunter 162gr ELDX for a gift and I cant find a decent rifle chambered in that caliber unless I want to spend $$$$$ on a custom rifle.
I grew up about an hour from Centralia. They have some of the best atv trails in that area. The stretch of highway that was closed down do to the fire became known as the Graffiti Highway. Thanks to the Corona Virus they started to cover it up by bringing in dirt to keep people from visiting the area.

Did you drive that boat on the Diversion Canal a lot? I'm pretty sure I've seen that boat a couple times.
You can try the-house.com, evo.com, or boardco.com. for your height and weight i would at least get a 144 or bigger. the sites i listed usually have a size chart.
