Corey can go back to his recruiting of old
Corey is still an elite recruiter. This year we just got the perfect storm of a bad situation.
I mean he's gotten the #1 corner to commit 2 of the last 3 seasons in Ricks and Stingley, and even though he wasn't the primary guy, got two of the top 3 safeties in the country into his room this year.

So 2007 is 14 years ago, and 2003 is 17 yrs ago. Those time periods are relevant to the Defensive line we want to build in 2021 in what way???
Did you have a specific point you were trying to make here?

I just worry about what he knows in the passing game. He’s not a LB or DB coach like many DCs were earlier in their careers. I’m curious, is there a good DC right now that started at DL? This isn’t a challenge, I’m just curious because these DC types usually started out at LB or DB.

Anthony Weaver for Texans is the only one I know was a DL coach to DC and he's only been there one year but Texans were horrible.

Dan Quinn was a DL coach, just looked him up.

I think we should try to get a good LB coach for sure. I had hoped Demeco Ryan was a possiblity, but obviously that's off the table now because he already got another job.
I'm not sure who we are looking at for LB coach, I hope it's another young, hungry dude that is very motivated to get our LB crew playing great.
I sure hope the interest we have in Nielsen is reciprocated, he is going to be in huge demand very soon, so we need to her him signed to a contract as soon as possible. I am pretty sure other NFL teams are going to come calling very soon.

I would if I think he is the best fit available... in a perfect world I get your point but it comes down to picking the guy you feel is best.
Based on what your saying, O should limit himself to a DC who specializes in LB or Safety.. not being argumentative but I don't think this is how it should be handled.

The game is won in the trenches. Great Dline play causes turnovers with fumbles and ints.

The only way I like this hire is if he’s Co DC with Corey Raymond. Because be honest.. D-line coach what does he know about coverage? In today’s style you have to stop the pass first. I’d feel better if I knew his scheme. It’s really a win win to promote Raymond to co DC with nielson. You have a veteran DB specialist as a curtain and you give him a well deserved Promotion

I'll hire and pay more to departments that I don't know as much about.
That is my only thought here. Geez, you guys live in your feelings and shout down everything thought that you don't agree with...
No, this does make sense. But you’re company’s departments are likely a lot more separated than football positions and their respective coaches. Accounting and HR aren’t all in the same meetings all day.
If O and Neilson haven’t picked up enough of all positions after 25-30+ years of full defensive meetings and practices run by DCs and daily working side-by-side with their position coach peers, then they’re likely not qualified to be HC or DC (which may help explain why Raymond is still a DB coach). M
But also, your logic makes more sense when just dealing with the side of the ball the HC has a background in. If they have a defensive background, you can’t “cover” all the positions with your OC’s specialty.
But I do think a lot of HCs probably would prefer to hire to their weaknesses in a perfect world (though I do think this does take a humility and self-awareness that not all coaches possess), but not at the expense of hiring the best guy. It may be a tie-breaker in the end, but you can’t disqualify 1/3 of the candidates in the beginning. IMHO, of course.

Well for one he has been a DC before. He has called plays.

Not to mention what he’s done with Trey Hendrickson on the saints this year. The guy was a menace off the edge in a situational role this year. Sucks he’s out with the neck injury. David Onyemata too. So much development.
The saints DL is probably the best and deepest in the NFL. They are the engine that makes the team run. Well them and Kamara, who should win offensive player of the year in a landslide.

Kamara should also be in the running for MVP i think, but we all know that award always goes to a QB. It’ll be Aaron Rodgers this year.

When you had Aranda, you had someone that both built and adjusted his defense to match what the other team did offensively. His defenses, when run correctly, dictated the match-up like most offenses do. My concern is this guy can’t do either. Where has he proven anything in a P5 environment? You cannot possibly tell me you will trust a guy that basically says “put your hand in the dirt and go”. That’s just dumb.

That’s just a dumb statement. You think a guy that has played the game, coached at college and nfl, only knows to tell a player put your hand in the dirt and go?
You think he hasn’t been a part of watching film, developing game plans, adjusting schemes week end, week out? Not to mention self scouting, player development. You think they defended Patrick Mahomes the same way they defend Tom Brady?
Good lord. Just pay attention to the nfl, they promote position coaches to coordinators all the time. Josh mcdanials, Ryan’s, Gruden, just to name a few. hell the giants h c was a position coach when he got the job.

I think the opposite of you. Having a dc who is your dl coach along with orgeron and a good grad asst like lacouture I think is helpful. The dc has more responsibility then just his position coaching and this will free him up a little to work with the other coaches and prepare his defense. We hire a great lber coach and a good safety coach and I think we come out ahead.

On this guy Neilsen
Here is all you need to know. He was a CO DC once at Northern Ill for 2 seasons and mostly Dline.
He is more than qualified to run the dline. Building his own defense? Not even close.
What you all really need to know is THIS. If this guy is hired it has nothing to do with a proven ability to build and run a defense. It has everything to do with the fact that Orgeron hired him before at Ole Miss.
It is a frickING PATTERN OF BEING ABLE TO TRY TO CONTROL HIS COACHES AND/OR HIRE HIS BUDDIES. OPEN YOUR frickING EYES!
“Nielsen served as the defensive line coach at the University of Mississippi from 2005-07 under current LSU Head Coach and former Saints assistant Ed Orgeron, following one season at the University of Idaho, where he coached two freshman All-Americans. Rebels defensive linemen led the Southeastern Conference in sacks twice during his three-year stint.”

We have a serious lack of talent. Paid Winston and all those assholes then got our asses strapped by the Cap because of that EX PATS frickING BOB. That dude ruined the organization and a-hole Cal went and hired another ex Pat in Cisneros to be the frickING GM. NAME 1 exPat coach that has been successful? That asswipe McDaniel RUINED THE BRONCOS. None of them aren’t shite without Brady and cheating. Romeo is a good DC but not even close to being a HC. Wade Phillips was the reason why BOB wasn’t run out of town years ago.
