Aptly named the Savage Impulse. Straight pull bolt that can be changed from right to left handed. As a lefty I like it as it’s a PITA to get lefty guns.

LINK to video and story.

I thought it was gonna be goofy but that actually looks badass, the ball bearing lock up is pretty slick too.

Did he say at the end of the video that the entire action is aluminum?

Did I understand that correctly?

I really don't understand why straight pull bolt guns haven't taken off

I’m intrigued, but at 8.8 pounds I’ll pass until they get a bit more svelte.

The lockup on the Savage is pretty similar to the Blaser. I think Savage missed the boat. They should have done away with the receiver and integrated the bolt rails in the stock like the Blaser. They then could have added the rail directly to the barrel and attached the barrel to the stock with a single large Allen screw. That would have made the rifle shorter and handier with a quick change barrel option.

Have a WW2 Steyer rifle in 8 mm with a straight bolt. Little gun kicks like mule but fun to shoot

Just bought a Blaser R8 last month so I have no need for it. They literally copied the Heym SR30 locking system lol. Also, with the the Blaser, barrel and bolt changes are easy and don't require headspacing. I have the 6.5 creed and a 9.3x62 barrel. They use the same bolt head so it's just 2 captured bushings in the stock that you loosen, pull the barrel out, and screw the bushings in the new barrel.

I’d shoot it. Looks like a good setup to stick a can on and make a night time hog gun.

Lefty here as well and it can be a pain finding a bolt action rifle.

That being said, I love the design of this Savage Impulse and would buy one in a heartbeat but I was surprised when I went to Savages website only to find they don’t chamber one in 7mm MAG. If they did, I’d be buying one ASAP.

Wonder why they don’t chamber one in 7 mag? I know some on this board don’t like a 7 Remington Mag but I have a lot of confidence in this cartridge and have hunted with a 7mag for 30 years now.

I see they make the Impulse in .243, 6.5cm, .308, 30-06, .300 WINMAG and .300 WSM. Out of those cartridge I’d get the .300WSM. I’ve always been interested in this cartridge but have never bought one. I’ve shot a .300WSM many times and I love it. My older brothers father in law has one and have shot it often. Since there isn’t one chambered in 7 mag, another reason I’d go with the .300wsm over the .300 winmag is the short action.

Thanks for posting the link. Very interested. Of course I’ll have to get with .257WBY because the next hunting rifle I planned on buying this spring was going to be a WBY magnum. The 7mm WBYMAG or .270WBYMAG.

PAGING .257wby, what are your thoughts?
