Anyone remember this joint down Nicholson across the tracks? The owner cooked a mean plate lunch back in the 80's.Cheap, good and a plate absolutely over-loaded with food.

think you mean the Silver Moon Cafe.

And yes, it was the best value for lunch in terms of flavor, soul, and quantity that i have ever had.

That's it. My bad. We got in there for lunch one day...didn't leave 'till we'd shot pool for 3 or so hours...and drank every beer she had in the place.I still remember the red beans...even after all those beers.

I always wanted to leaving, it was so good and rich.... they ran her off chimes street. I bet if somebody had offered $$$ to make it more modern with an upgraded kitchen, keep the same staff/attitude/atmosphere, and actually advertise... the place could have been an institution instead of a hole-in-the wall. Would be packed for game day weekends... offer plate lunches to go of smothered chicken, red or white beans, etc.

She cooked all that food in a kitchen the size of a damn closet. 2meats a vegetable and bread...dirt cheap. And she called the red beans a vegetable...she had a ton of pork and sausage in that pot.

Great place .... too bad didn't fit in the "upscale" look that the Venue and other apartment complexes coming up in the area are trying to promote ...

I liked the food, but one day my wife and I went in for an early lunch. Apparently, they occasionally reheat food cooked the day before. From our table, we could see the old guy in the kitchen removing food from a big ziplock. He'd take one bite out the bag, put one scoop in the pot, take one bite out the bag...You get the picture. Not the cleanest place.

I remember her giving food on "credit" because she couldn't "let her babies go hungry." She said pay me back next week or when you graduate and get rich.

Great place. Never got to the Chimes St. incarnation. Many a sleepy afternoon after some smothered chicken and yams!

She relocated to St. Gabriel, but I believe it caught fire as well.

On Martin Luther King street if I remember correctly.

Ate there several times.

Damn good.
