re: Hate to start another hot tamale topic,
Posted by Tlclsu on 10/25/19 at 3:23 pm
I love tamales (including Pimanyoli's - grew up on Muffaletta's). Recently tried some trying to recreate New Orleans' "Manuel's" - which were very different from our "Delta style" in Baton Rouge, but were a pre-Katrina favorite. This guy has gotten very close and his are delicious if you spot him...

Looking for options for a friend who had dental surgery and can't have anything solid for a few weeks, but wants to get out. Any ideas? TIA...
re: Kalurah St. Grill updates?
Posted by Tlclsu on 6/22/19 at 12:32 pm
Went to Kalurah for first time in months last night. Definitely still up to snuff, even with the changes. Short ribs were excellent. Service and drinks were all fine. Not every table was filled, but there were still plenty of peeps dining - it's a deceptively big place....
re: Kalurah Street Grill any good?

I love the place. Great cocktails. My favorite main right now is the ribeye with udon noodles in a curry broth. Delicious!...

Loved that place! Does anyone in town do a good meat pie? Only place I seem to get them anymore is Jazzfest?...
re: Egg nog recipes

I found my favorite in the Mr. Boston book - called "The Ambassador's Morning Lift" -
32 oz prepared dairy eggnog (I use Kleinpeter's)
6 oz Cognac / Brandy / Bourbon (I use Christian Bros brandy or Jack Daniels)
3 oz dark rum (I've used white too - still good)
3 oz Creme de Cacao
Good stuff...

Thai Kitchen moving - What's up with Southdowns Village?
Posted by Tlclsu on 1/6/15 at 5:22 pm
Why are all the restaurants in SV closing or moving? I wonder if this is a good move for Thai Kitchen - that's a lot of $$ to invest....

re: Pre-made, delivered meals in Baton Rouge?

I can help with the premade, but not sure they'd deliver. Great food with different menu daily. [link=(http://www.chefdonb.com/midcity-market/)]Don Bergeron's MidCity Market and Catering daily menu[/link]...

re: Tried Some Mamita's Hot Tamales Today
Posted by Tlclsu on 7/19/14 at 6:04 pm
Tried them a few weeks ago and had same conclusion. Delicious, but not as close to Manuel's as I'd hoped. While I'll get some more from Mamitas, I'll continue looking for Manuel's replacement. Closest I've found are Guillory's in Metairie, off of Airline. Are there any other good recs out there...
Lunch rec (with full bar) in Sherwood / Coursey area???
Posted by Tlclsu on 4/20/14 at 11:18 pm
My Dad and I both live in midcity and don't eat out in Sherwood Coursey area often. I'm off this week, and we're running errands out there tomorrow - thought we'd do lunch. Can only think of Chimes East - what other good options can we get a good lunch with midday cocktail on a Monday? Thanks in ...

Great recs - I'd add the (recently returned) Zorba's on Essen for some fantastic Greek....

Mary Mahoney's is the best. Great food.
Have tried Salute' and remember it being fine, but crowded.
Jazzeppi's - hmm. Went with my Dad - I had a Veal dish that I liked okay, but had trouble getting past the canned asparagus and mushrooms, and the atmosphere is not that great. But Dad had so...

re: Metairie eats?

Try Fury's - great menu with typical "New Orleans neighborhood" menu - trout amandine, fried chicken and seafood, some Italian. On Martin Behrman, just off of Vets. [link=(http://www.furysrestaurant.com/)]Fury's website[/link]...
Where (in Baton Rouge / NOLA) to buy wine "quartino" caraffes???

My Dad is fascinated with these things, and comments whenever served with one. I want to find a few for him for Christmas, and plan to start looking in the next week. But just in case someone already knew exactly where to find them..... Thanks in advance if you're that someone!
I plan to check...
