Hospitals in Baton Rouge are expecting delivery rooms to fill up in 2021.
Doctors say the uptick can point back to 2020's stay-at-home orders beginning close to nine months ago.
Dr. Candace Moore, an OBGYN at Baton Rouge General, says, "Starting in January, which of course would be nine months after the stay-at-home order was initiated, we’re seeing an uptick of at least 10 to 20 percent per month in our expected births."
Hospital officials at Women's say they'll deliver about 15 newborns today and plan to see 200 more births total in the next three months. That number is an increase from their usual between 650 to 780 deliveries monthly.
Doctors at Ochsner say they saw a rise in o.b. appointments this summer following quarantine and expect to see a sharp rise in deliveries in the first quarter of 2021.
Dr. Candace Moore says there's a few possible reasons for the pregnancy uptick.
"I always say it's a little bit better than a hurricane because when you stay at home, you're bored,
but at least this way you have air conditioning. People tend to turn to one another in crisis or exciting moments and this is one of the ways they do that. And the next thing you know, we’re very busy at work."
Doctors say nationwide, there is a three to 10% increase in expecting mothers.
Who will be a statistic this year?

Actually quite the opposite..
COVID baby boom? No, 2020 triggered a baby bust - and that will have lasting impacts
quote:
roughly nine months since COVID-19 triggered a national emergency in the U.S., experts are reporting a baby bust.
There will be significantly fewer newborns this winter and in 2021.
Whether social distancing urged romantic partners to meet less, or financial strain and child care uncertainty caused families to hit pause on having kids, the coronavirus pandemic has led to a decline in both planned and unplanned pregnancies, experts said.
Nationwide, a Thursday Brookings Institute report projects around 300,000 fewer births next year. Google trends showed significant decreases in sex and pregnancy-related searches. And in a report published Wednesday, Modern Fertility found that about 30% of people with ovaries are changing their family plans, with most deciding to delay conception.
"Everything about our lives has been turned upside down," Phillip Levine, an economics professor at Wellesley College and co-author of the Brookings report, told USA TODAY.
And the size of the incoming COVID baby bust, he added, could have "lasting implications for society."

What do you bet the main individuals having children remain the same groups who probably shouldn’t be having any to begin with?
Not referring to O, as far as I know of.

No, they handle the people who can’t / won’t be responsible and want someone to bail them out.

We had a new one arrive middle of last month, and the nurses in the hospital said we were the leading edge of the baby-boom they were expecting. Our kid was conceived prior to lockdown, but I'm sure my daughter will always be classified as a covid baby.

Our first in due in the Spring, but this was planned before COVID-19 was a thing.

Harder for single people to mingle, so unplanned pregnancies outside of wedlock may be down in 2021.
Married couples that are stuck in the same house for 20+ weeks are probably experiencing the boom.
So this trend may be a silver lining to this Covid cloud.
