I knew he signed, but wasn't sure if he was ever on campus. I was in Monroe in '87 and went to a few games, and that was a pretty magical season for NLU and the city. Even if it was 1-AA.

I think Arnsparger insisted that he attend class occasionally, Humphries said I'd rather not so he transferred. That's the story that I heard.

played at Northeast.

Stovall signed him in the Spring of 1983. Very highly recruited. He was even on the cover of the student phone book that fall.
He and Arnsparger had a falling out in the Spring of '84 and it was 'mutually decided' he leave.

Played at LSU. Saw very limited action and transferred. Incredibly strong arm.

I was around Monroe back then as well. It was pretty sweet watching him play for NLU.

Had a great career at NLU, passing for 23 tds and over 4300 yards in two seasons. Lead the Indians to a 1-AA National Title. Drafted by Washington, later lead San Diego to a Super Bowl. Most folks know all that, but what is new is that he is the AD and head girl's basketball coach at St. Mary's High School in Natchitoches.

Timmy Byrd quit before the first game in 1983.

Stan was one of those kids that just didn't adjust well to being away from home the first time...was just eat up with home sickness. One of the ways this manifested was class cutting. A Coach would literally escort him to class, he would wait a few minutes then leave. It wasn't going to work, so he wound up transfering closer to home. Things worked out well for him from there.

I met Stan in my first class at LSU ever. He introduced himself as "I am Stan a football player". We became pretty good friends in class.
He left after 1983 for NLU. He didn't like riding the pine and NLU promised he would start immediately. Stan and Stovall didn't get along well. Stan didn't like to go to class. Arnsbarger came in and sealed the deal. He suspended Stan based on his class attendence. That was it for Stan and LSU.
I always liked Stan and followed his career. He was a good guy at heart but he also had a big ego.

He helped NLU win a national 1-AA title in a circus tent in Idaho.

I saw all the home games in '87, Stan was the man, we even had the playoffs at home. I wish ULM would go back to I-AA, or whatever it's called, they could be competitive again.

Hell, I wish they would go back to "NLU". And "The Indians".
Wish the Siesta would open back up (ok, you gotta be from there). Ahhh, the good old days.....
