So years ago when I was young and dumb I received a notice in the mail that I had won a free trip. I called to verify and they said I had to come in for a 30 minute tour of one of the timeshares and then I get to spin the wheel for my free trip with no obligations to buy but I have to come in. Great. I drive to the location and a smoking hot blonde comes out. We drive around in a golf cart looking at the property and just talking. Not a bad trip for me. On the way back to the office she asked what I though about the timeshare and I said it’s not a good fit for me at this point in my life. Instantly her demeanor changed. She said I needed to be more open minded. At the time I thought this was weird but it was just the start.

We go to this building that was really open inside with a ton of tables/chairs and is very loud from all the people sitting and talking. I sit at a table with the blonde and a fat man with a suit comes and sits in front of me. He starts going over the time share. I tell him politely that I was not interested and this is not for me. He pauses for a second and ignores what I said continues to talk, blah blah blah. I tell him no again and nothing. He keeps going. The blonde keeps chiming in how she can’t believe how closed minded I am and how I need to listen. I keep saying No but they won’t leave me alone. Being nice is not working. So I decide to be a smart arse. All of my answers are very sarcastic. Fatty is getting mad. I state that “I am just here for my free trip man.” Fatty snaps back “we can’t give free trips to everybody here or we will go bankrupt!” I say ”that is not my problem” and I lean back with my hands behind my head and say “How is the weather in Aruba this time of year” with a big smile on my face. Uhh ohh. Fatty’s head turns bright red and I think it is going to pop. He stands up and starts pacing while staring at me. Blonde rolls her eyes at me. I was thinking “WTF”. He sits back down and continues to grill me. Ok, this sucks and I am ready to leave. My last tactic to get of this is the “silence” approach. Yes, No, and “I don’t know” are my only responses for every question here on out. This actually works. Fatty finally gives up, shakes my hand, and gives me my paper to redeem my trip. The entire interrogation process took about 1 hour.

I go into another building and a young couple is in there. I ask if they joined and they said “no and that was exhausting.” I agreed. I spun the wheel and won a cruise to the Bahama’s. I still had to pay for my flight to Miami, food, drinks, tips, excursions, taxes....so my free trip was nothing more than a discounted trip and it was not worth it.

I know some people that do these meetings a lot. Their strategy is to tell them they simply cant afford it. "No money. No job. That's why we have to come to you for a vacation."

One time I showed up to a establishment like this because I had heard they were giving away a free set of golf clubs if I listen to a pitch about some pyramid scheme product. I knew it was a pyramid scheme going in, I just wanted the golf clubs. After about a minute of talking, the salesmen immediately pivots and pitches me a timeshare. I had realized that I can buy additional weeks and sell the weeks I don't want so I could essentially vacation for free. Well guess what? I took the prick for 3 weeks so I could get PAID to vacation.

I once got held up in a timeshare presentation in Aspen for 3 days where I found out even the President of the United States is owned by timeshares. Now I pay $6,000 a year for a single week retreat.

Years ago, when my daughter was young, we started going to Disney. 2nd trip, we went to the DVC presentation, toured the model, and got a bunch of Fast Passes for our time. Wasn't bad, and no real pressure. Sales guy messed up and told me how easy it was to sell, if I bought, and Disney would even buy them back sometimes. Even told me about "renting" my unused points.

Went back home, and started researching the secondary market. Ended up buying from a private individual. Went to Orlando 3 more times using the timeshare, and their Hawaii resort 3 times. Daughter got older, we stopped going to Disney. Sold my timeshare for more than I paid for it.

Keep in mind, Disney isn't a traditional timeshare that holds you to certain dates.

As my dad tells it, my parents, with 5 year old me and my sister, and two different cousins each with spouses and 3 kids, showed up to a timeshare presentation in Orlando to get free tickets to Disney. After a few minutes with the 8 kids in our group ravaging their donuts and it being clear none of the group was signing up, they gave us the tickets and asked us to leave.

We got gifted a trip by my wife’s family one time when they couldn’t make it to their time share in Park City.

This was early in our marriage, I wasn’t making a ton of money and my new bride was making less. They corralled us in the lobby and I started reading the brochure where it said you had to make 100k or something to qualify to buy one. Told the lady this trip was a gift and we don’t make 100k, so we were kind of wasting time here. Got up and left. Told my wife this was the last time I’d be going on a time share trip.

The timeshare peddlers are really odd also. Just strange people that have somehow been brainwashed into thinking this shits a good idea. They also set up at the strangest of places. I’ve been hit up at a St Louis Blues game and the Memphis Bass Pro Shops with that hey you wanna go to Vegas for $100 spiel.

Just helped get my mom out of a timeshare. Thankfully her timeshare was through Wyndham and they have a program you can go through to "give back" the timeshare and walk away. The process took about 5 months but it was worth it.

ETA: It was free to get out of.

Had a similar encounter in Playa del Carmen (south of Cancun) in the mid '90s.

The concierge at the resort we were staying at told us about it, that the resort was giving away $1,000(US) vouchers to folks who would sit through the spiel.

We did, it was less than two hours total right south of the ferry landing in Carmen.

I used the voucher to pay for almost all of our stay at the resort we were at, they refunded my Credit Card $1,000.

Never again.

Only been to a DVC one. Did not buy. I think we got some food credits or something. The wife was actually looking at wanting to buy one. But she didn't want to pay cash, thank goodness, and the interest rates were stupid.

I go to their sales presentations for the free gifts and the fun of pissing off the sales person.

My favorite tactic is act like I have to let someone know I will be gone for awhile, ask the "how long will this take?".

I set a timer on my phone then and place it on the table and tell them to make it their best pitch, but under no circumstances am I buying anything.

I then proceed to pick apart their arguments

Normally doesn't last more than 20 minutes.
Helps if you loudly point out negative points (when the people sitting in earshot start listening to you) they try to get you out of there.

I went to one several years ago, it wasn’t Disney and I forget the name. It was based off points and they had hotels affiliated hotels worldwide. I researched the company and found out they changed management companies. The new company had the worst customer service raiting. Most of the complaints were improper booking dates and zero response from customer support. I could buy more points at 25% of the cost as well, which really raised some red flags.

The idea sounds great, pre-paying hotel stays, but in reality the time share cuts too many costs and is sub-par in delivering anything. If you travel regularly, your hotel and airline points will more than pay for any money invested in a timeshare.

I got a deeply discounted 3-day stay in Myrtle Beach, courtesy of Hilton’s vacation club, for a similar 3-hour property tour and sales spiel, minus the high pressure.

Wife and I were walking out of the hotel in Vegas one time and got stopped by these guys doing the timeshare deal.. they told us we could get free show tickets, lunch, and 2 restaurant vouchers.

My wife wanted to do it just for the free stuff and I was pretty adamant about just going about our business. Me trying to get my wife out of there made them throw in 2 more show tickets and vouchers.. so I said what the hell, it's free lunch.

They shuttled us over to the "presentation" and walked around this hotel for a couple hours or so, had a free buffet type lunch, and listen to this guy try to sell it to us. He was a little pushy but not too bad.

All in all, we got about $250 worth of stuff for about 3 hours of our time that we really didn't have much planned for anyway so I feel it was worth it. I get a random call and email every few weeks about that's about it.
