Heading to Old Mexico

Heading down to Old Mexico for the week. No guns just Stick and String. I have been making this trip for 10 years now and just as excited as the first time. My FIL has some real nice cull 8s and 10s on camera. The javelinas are out of control so we will be looking to thin some of those as well.

Do you drive your personal truck across the border?

I have flown to the Pacific coast of Mexico (Ixtapa) from Juarez several times and always drive from El Paso to the airport in Juarez. Its about 10 miles from the border and as a domestic flight is usually around $500 less than flying from El Paso. Never had a minutes problem. My wife, up to 2 years ago, was going to Juarez alone several times a year for dental work....perfectly safe. It is perfectly possible to get into a heap of trouble in Mexico if one wishes to do so....but its also entirely possible to stay out of trouble....if you ain't looking for trouble odds of finding it are slim to none...the biggest problem is usually the traffic going North.

Man. Juarez has one of if not the highest violent crime rates in the world. I don’t think perfectly safe is an apt description. They behead people and hang bodies from bridges as regular occurrences. I would be very careful down there.
Yes it’s cartel violence but people get caught in the cross fire all the time.

Ciudad Juarez saw almost 1,500 homicides in 2019, making it the fourth most deadly year in history for the city. That’s according to data reported by El Diario de Juarez, which says there were only seven days throughout all of last year in which there no homicides.

Years ago we would walk across in Loredo, go to the Dr and tell him we were stressed out due to work.
It was like $20.00 then you could walk next door to the pharmacy and get 180 xanez and 180 blue valium for about $65.00.
You had a Dr's script and a receipt so you claimed them at the border and went on back home in the states

As far as I know it hasn't changed a lot....I think it is still possible and still being done on the regular.

Juarez is extremely dangerous if you are involved in the drug trade in some manner. If you are simply going to a doctor or a restaurant its not much different than any major city in the US....entirely possible to get caught in the crossfire in even rural areas of the US. It would be unwise to not be careful in any city the size of Juarez.....but generally speaking if you ain't in the drug business and not a local person with a local business (apparently protection rackets are very common) its no more threatening than any sizeable city...Juarez is a pretty big town.

My dad used to live in El Paso before i was born. Worked in a medical center my grandfather owned. He dated a Hispanic girl whose brother was in the cartel and my dad used to party and go to all the bars in Juarez. He has interesting stories to say the least

This- I used to drive all over Veracruz for work. By myself. Even from Mexico City once.
My client (anAmerican company) thought I was nuts- they were riding in armored Suburbans.
Their security detail told me- “you’re the only smart gringo in the bunch....you come here, don’t make noise, and drive a rental Hyundai....you’re the safest one.”

Sorry I apologize for the late response. Yes I do drive my personal vehicle across. We cross at Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras. Knock on wood we have never encountered any problems here. There are two less javelinas as if this afternoon. I have never seen javelinas like they are down here currently.

Juarez is still a lot of fun and a great city to spend a few days....good food, good people and good bars. I have made some very good friends in Juarez and El Paso and if you ever get a chance to do Juarez with a local do not pass it up....it is a lot of fun. If you read the state department warnings it is clear there is NO indication that the violence, which is real, tragic and commonplace, is targeted toward anyone NOT involved in drug trafficking except for protection rackets of local businesses...it is entirely possible to get caught in the crossfire but this is true in any city in North America....its also possible to get mugged, car jacked, or have you credit card/atm card scanned when used and be a victim of that sort of crime....but again, this can happen anywhere. It is horrifying to contemplate a heinous act like beheading a rival and it does happen in the state, not as common in the city of Juarez....but it is almost unheard of if not unheard of with innocent people not involved in the drug trade. Kidnapping of foreigners was a thing for a while but the cartels realized the risk wasn't worth the reward...still can happen but its not a risk that should keep anyone interested in going to Mexico from going....

I totally agree that if you go looking for trouble down here you will find it. Once we cross the gate we do not leave the property until we go home.

Are you by any chance hunting at Rancho Canoitas?
Posted on 12/29/20 at 8:54 am to SCwTiger
No I am not. I am at El Gato.

Just wondered. Have a friend that guides there and they kill some studs.

Is buying auto insurance for Mexico from Sanborns still a thing at the border?
Client was a member of the group robbed 14 years ago down there while in the field. Told me it was an inside job and many Rolex’s were seized that afternoon. Easier pickings than what you’re doing I would guess.
