Green tips seem to be popular at least in what I see. What are the overall benefits of each tip color?

Eta: specifically 5.56 but I’m open to learn about it all if anyone cares to shed any light

Green tips

quote:

M855 is often called “green tip” ammo for its special color coding (the full metal jacket is painted green at the nose). These 5.56 cartridges push a 62 grain projectile designed with a boat tail, lead core, and a special steel “penetrator” tip. The specified muzzle velocity of M855 ammo is roughly 3,020 feet per second. The primer and case mouth are chemically sealed, just like M193 ammunition.

The bullet loaded in M855 differs significantly from M193 and other standard FMJs. These “penetrator” projectiles were specifically engineered to improve long-range performance in the Belgian Minimi and American M249 SAW. The design was also intended to improve penetration (especially the penetration of Russian helmets) over its predecessor, the M193. In that regard, it definitely delivers. M855 has served as the standard ball ammunition of the United States and other NATO countries since 1982.

The green tips (painted, not plastic) have a steel core, and will go through some heavier stuff.

The color of colored ballistic tips makes no difference in performance.

The color MIGHT give some indication of caliber but that isn’t firm either.

Green tips are good for the environment
Red tips cause lots of blood loss
Yellow tips are piss poor
White tips are racist
Silver tips kill werewolfs
Any questions

Wonder why anybody would waste those at a range?

The Orange tip (painted or coated) is a tracer round.

Those are pretty neat to fire long distances at night to watch the bullet light up.

They used to be really cheap so they made good range ammo if the range allowed it.

Green tips are over rated. Standard 5.56 is better for 2 legged targets. The new M855A1 is a different story, but I am pretty sure they call it a "green" round because they took the lead out of it, I don't think they paint the tip green any longer.

The reason they painted the tips of the bullets green on M855 ammo was to distinguish it from the 55 grain M193 Ammo.

Was listening to the Shawn Ryan podcast, I think,it was Mike Ritland? Maybe someone else.
He was discussing an operation. Some Iraqi steps into the middle of a street with a weapon. He got lit up by several guys, and took off running. Said he ran at least 60yds before he fell.
They were using green tips. Didn’t seem to be big fans. That said I’ve got a 1000 or so.

I’m about to shoot something with a Barnes bullet with a blue tip.
It will kill.

Green tips were designed for the squad automatic weapon and intended to provide more energy downrange. The Obama administration tried to say that they were to defeat armor which is not true.

Shawn, Ritland, and about every other former special operations guy I've ever listened to talk about ammo say that Green Tips are absolute piece os shite rounds for actually killing things, especially people.

There are numerous stories of guys pounding rounds into guys and they don't stop or die. Shawn says the same thing about FMJ 9mm ammo.

They all say 77 grain HPs are BY FAR the best 5.56 round. And those aren't tipped at all.

If you can get your hands on those, that's what you should be using for home defense or hunting.

Problem is, if you can even find them right now, you're probably going to pay nearly $2/round. Those things are the gold standard of 5.56/223.

This is well known about FMJ and any ammo not designed to mushroom. Most military rounds are designed like this. The basic principle is they either kill or don’t, I believe. But yeah I mean I don’t know about special forces guys, but most standard military rounds are fmj or similar.

According to Geneva convention, we're only supposed to try and kill each other with FMJ.

Edit: I don't know if this includes everybody, or just people who signed the convention paper. I don't remember signing it.
