Better on back 9 than front 9 routinely

I've gotten into this weird rut where I will be 8+ over on the front and go on to shoot 5 or less over on the back. I've been as far apart as 14 over on the front and 2 over on the back recently.

I hit the range and work on target practice before most rounds, but sometimes not. Doesn't seem to be a warmup issue. Playing at different courses, so it's not like one course that has a more difficult front than back.

Seems like it's something mentally, but I don't know what to change. I also hate the mental card. Always seems like a cop out for not wanting to address swing fundamentals. But I do believe that developing a routine is always helpful so maybe I'm looking for routine suggestions here.

It isn't one part of my game consistently. Sometimes driver is just a bit off, sometimes irons and sometimes short game. Sometimes all of those strokes are a problem.

Anyone else run into this occurrence and what do you do to break it? Shooting higher on the back isn't an option either.

Golf is your problem.

It’s likely just that you start to get more comfortable as the round goes on. Loosen up. Feel more confident about distances and feel on chips and putts.

Maybe spend more time on the range before your round

That's all not unfair to say. I definitely feel putts better as the round goes on. Same with approach shots.

I've tried spending a lot of time on the range and skipping it altogether and everything in between. I think I need to establish a goal on the range. I'm not shooting blindly but I think I need to establish a routine there.

When do you get to the course? How much time do you spend warming up? How many putts do you hit? It seems like you are not warm before you start your front 9, so it would stand to reason that you are getting warm for your back 9 score which is normally better.

Play the first 3 holes on the range after you get warm. What shot do I need on 1 tee? What will that leave me in? Etc. also it sound like once your round goes to shite, you start playing. Play hole to hole shot to shot

Seems like the front nine bad score tempers your expectations going to the back. Play more free

This is me. Lately I've had a good 9 and a bad 9. Good on the front, bad on the back. Bad on the front and good on the back. I need to get better at loosening up the whole round and just playing.

Lately it has been a lot of 42/50 and 50/42 on my rounds.

I came here to say the exact same thing. Are you drinking the front 9 and by the back 9 your body is lubed up?

I go through a bucket of balls. Start with wedge and work my way to driver. Typically try to get three consecutive shots on target before moving on. Then I back track and work on clubs that gave me difficulty if I have time. I putt for about 10-15 min. One problem I've noticed is the practice green is typically not consistent with course greens on several of my regular courses. But that's only relevant when my putting is problematic.

I've tried swinging more and less without much success.

As for beer, funny that comes up. If I have a particularly rough front nine, I generally grab 3 or 4 to enjoy the rest of the round and typically play slightly better after getting the aiming juice going. I've tried drinking a few on the front with no noticeable success.

I have a healthy beer habit, but drinking beer before I get enough coffee is not a good scenario either.

In some ways, this "feels" like what the problem is. Difficulty is feeling that loose feeling from the start, which goes back to the mental aspect, which I hate to blame errant shots on a mental deficiency. Logically, it is swing mechanics that cause bad shots.

Another point to consider is that the rounds I seem to do better in are played in the afternoon, and I have a harder time getting going in the mornings which is when my money rounds are.

If you are drinking a bunch of coffee before a round that caffeine might not be helping.

Explain. I drink a pot of coffee a day generally.

Idk. Just saying you may be more relaxed on the back 9 because you aren’t full of caffeine. I seriously doubt this had anything to do with it just saying.

This sounds like a mental block more than a physical thing.

Try to play aggressive through the first six holes. Get into the mentality that you want to make birdies or pars and will be disappointed if you don't rather than trying to avoid disaster in your first 3 - 4 holes then getting into your groove.

We should tag team it. I got the front and you get the back.

Consistently 2 or 3 under on front and got to hold on to keep it around even par.

My problem is I only play 2 or 3 times a month and I don't hit balls on the range. Swing gets a little squirrelly after my 45 year old body gets tired

Serious question - is your home course front 9 harder than back? Example - UC in Baton Rouge - back seems easier by like 2-3 strokes - have played many, many rounds to prove this up. Sometimes the course might be the difference

ETA - it’s probably bc u are more loose after screwing your round on the front

Well, it isn't just my home course that this occurrence was happening. Seems like the courses I play are about 50/50 if the front or back is harder.

And as an update to this thread, I actually played better on the front 9 the last two rounds than the back 9. Seems to confirm that it's something mental with my play. I played more reserved on the back 9 the last two rounds. Seems I need to play aggressive and not get comfortable with my score and start playing "smart shots". I can screw those up the same as aggressive shots.

Also, I've determined that sand is the number one detriment to my game. Guess I need to watch some videos and practice. I hate the sand.
