Met him once at a charity gala. Talked to my wife and I for a good 10 mins. Nicest down to earth guy

He also had a successful baseball career.

He was a Negro League All-Star before his singing career, and his lifelong love of the sport eventually led him to be part of the Texas Rangers ownership group.
