Why was the PS2 so dominate?

It is the most popular system of all time and had a pretty crazy lifespan (I believe it went all the way up to Madden 12). The Xbox, though, was a much more powerful system and no memory cards were needed. I guess it was the gaming library?

I dunno, but I definite remember mailing my memory card to the dude that did NcAA rosters and getting it back with rosters loaded completely. The good ol days

The PS2 was cheaper than most dvd players at the time, plus it played games.

First DVD Player/Console right as DVDs went mainstream

In terms of graphics and power it was a huge jump from the PS1 as well. It put the prior generation's graphics (PS1/N64) to shame. While the jump to 3D was impressive because it was a totally new way of playing games, nobody thought the graphics looked realistic.

The fact that the PS2 was able to handle Shadow of the Colossus was amazing in and of itself.

It had the best mono player games. If you wanted something to play with by yourself, you got a ps2. If you wanted to play with friends, you got a gamecube. If you wanted a balance between the two, you got an x-box.

The PS2 was the right hardware at the right time, and it was in a way the default choice for a console that generation even though all the other platforms were great consoles too.
Sega was on their way out
Xbox was new, had no established user base, and also had to wait a couple years for the GTA games
GameCube launches a whole year after PS2 without DVD playback

What’s really interesting is how the gamecube was actually the most powerful console with the best graphics, but its game catalog didn’t really take advantage of it

i love my x-brick but ps2 was too good a value for my parents to pass up

I do love my old x-box. KOTOR, Fable, NCAA football, Halo, etc

By the time GameCube came out PS2 had already crushed the world.
Also Nintendo was never going to allow the type of games Sony was going to. Twisted Metal Black, GTA III, God of War with BEWBS
The PS2 era is when a lot of gamers realized they had outgrown Nintendo, myself included.

I'll never forget getting mine for Christmas with NCAA 03 maybe? Something like Carson palmer on the cover.
We hooked it up in the living room & everyone was amazed and how good that game looked.
***looked it up, it was NCAA 2002 with Weinke

I mean the Xbox system came out well after the PS2 (a whole year). And it was a brand new system without anything established.
Really hard to compare those two.
