Gilbert had a chance to walk back his body hurting statement after the blowback yesterday meeting with O and stuck by it apparently. He’s just soft.

Can you provide a link to Gilbert’s statement?

I supported and understood every other players decision.

Not this. Gilbert quit and it’s shameful.

An obvious downside to being a extremely candid coach.

He wasn’t candid. He has caveman level intelligence when thinking on his feet and saying “his body hurt” was the only thing O could come up with on the fly

Which is horrifying considering there no way he didn't expect that question going into the interview.

This quitting shite is getting so old. I don't recall a single player quitting during our 1998 season when we were 6th in the country and finished the season 4-7. Guys like Kevin Faulk and Anthony McFarland had nothing left to prove or to play for but came out every weekend and played their asses off, even while getting blasted by Arkansas the last game of the season.

I’m so tired if this “grown men judging a kid for a decision to better his life” bull crap argument. Yes, we do judge them for it because without “grown men” football doesn’t get watched, which means football at the end of the day, won’t mean crap.

Why? They all quit. Trying to rationalize doesn’t change that fact.

It's humorous that people actually believe that Gilbert is leaving the team because his "body hurts".

He's leaving because the team is in disarray, and there are major cultural issue right now within the program.

Gilbert is different because he doesn’t have the NFL excuse. And it’s not a transfer.

There’s no other possible answer.

I’m not interested in discussing Chase, Marshall, Shelvin, etc. again

It really should be surprising how many can't get this, but it's not.

I don't think many actually believe that. It was pretty obvious why momma came to Baton Rouge yesterday. It wasn't to look after her son with a "hurting body." It was to pack up his shite for his move back to Marietta

Transfer rules have changed drastically, and he could possibly use a variety of things as cover to get out of this, is my understanding. "Opting out" now sets that up.

The expectation is that the NCAA will vote (perhaps in January) to remove the "sit one" rule for first time transfers. If so, no waiver needed.

O can, and I'm sure will, try to recruit him back. But I suspect that ship has sailed and you can bet your last dollar that other schools have been (indirectly) reaching out to him to influence this decision.

While understandable in its initial implementation, there should have been a deadline to "opt out" without consequence (i.e. losing a year of eligibility). But then the NCAA waived all loss of eligibility and essentially gave any and everyone the chance to quit without consequences. And they are about to endorse college football "free agency".

If you think HS recruiting is a blood sport, wait until coaches are overtly trying to raid each other's teams without discretion. LSU, O and Woodward better strap it up now because LSU let their empire crash and the enemies are at the gate ready to pounce (and already are. See Gilbert).

The BEST case scenario would be for the season to end NOW so any staff changes can begin in earnest and O can start re-recruiting the current players ALONG with HS seniors. While unfathomable less than 12 months ago, the trust in the coaching staff is by and large gone. Either O does what is necessary to build it back or his hubris allows him to go down in history as a HC who caught lightening in a bottle for one season, but was an otherwise poor coach

I’d be more ok if it was an immediate move into the transfer portal. This is chickenshit.

Wish him luck and would love to have him back on the team next year. Hope he gets his head straight and does great wherever he is but I just don’t see where he will ever reach his full potential.

If he just wants to be a receiver and not do the things that make TE’s a TE then his value for LSU is not that high. LSU has plenty of WR’s that can do more than just be oversized at the position.
