Go apple picking. Visit Cape Elizabeth and see the headlight. We actually went on this road that had a bunch of apple orchards and stopped at random ones. Had a great time.

Where in Maine are you looking to go? We go every summer and fall for a couple days, but usually in the Kennebunkport and Portland areas.
Also, I'd recommend Vermont over New Hampshire if you're looking to go elsewhere.

I liked Ogunquit a lot. It's about 40 mins away from Portland.

Great place, especially after Labor Day when the summer people leave. Use Portland as your base. A lot to do around there, great restaurants, etc. Can also drive up or down the coasts. Or even inland to the mountains.
There are plenty of places to stay in Portland. But if you want to stay by the coast, take a look at Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth. Great place with a path down to a nice state park beach. It is a short drive into Portland from there.

Maine is badass but be ready because when it gets cold there it is on another level.

Went to Bar Harbor a few years ago. Stayed in the Coach Stop Inn in Bar Harbor. Across the street from the national park and 10 mins to town. Was great.

Went in May. Was cool temp then. Chased lighthouses from Portsmouth NH to Acadia National Park. Camden is great town to stay in also.
