Pretend you are the parent of said athlete in the position of opting out? . What is the discussion you have privately with your kid?

I’d privately discuss how we are going to pay back a portion of the scholarship.

Honestly, I’m annoyed O played marshall against A&M

How can you expect others to be all in when your best player isn’t?

Risk/Reward

Do you want to Risk a career ending injury for a potential championship season? You have proven your abilities and given everything to this program. I support you either way.

But im a fan...so dont quit on your team. Play all 4 years at the school you committed to. You OWE the school your services.

If things aren’t going your way, quit. If your wife pisses you off, leave her. If you’re down big at halftime, forfeit the second half. If your teammates aren’t as good as you, never pass the ball. If the referee makes a bad call against you, pitch a fit. If you don’t like how the government is operating, break stuff.

Not any of this^

My only question is "Why play against A&M if you knew you were opting out?"

I'm not jumping off a bridge because TM left. He's his own man and unfortunately, as a fan, these are the times we live in.

I do think he will get asked the question by NFL teams, "Why now?" I hate to use this word, but it almost seems cowardly to wait until the toughest part of the schedule to opt out.

Either way, good luck to him and hopefully someone will take the reigns at the WR position.

________
I don’t understand the risk statement. If you want to opt out that fine, but everything in life is a risk.

My son came to me when he was a sophomore in high school and said he wanted to quit football. I told him he needs to finish the season, and if he doesn't want to play next year, then he can quit. I told him when you become part of a team, whether you are the star or not, your team depends on you. Good life lesson for him.

Marshall has dealt with significant injuries if I recall included his Sr HS season and the broken foot injury last year costing him 4 games. It would not surprise me if that risk of injury given his past wore on his and his parents mind more than ever once it became clear this season was shot.

You can bet your arse that question will be asked. I hope he has a good answer ready, if there is one.

Honestly, I don't think the NFL really cares. They view college football as simply a minor league system. If a player is physically ready to be drafted on 11/29 of his junior season, the scouts/GM's, etc don't care if he plays in 3 more games or not. They understand that there is another level above college football and won't "penalize" a guy for protecting his investment.

Now, that's not to say they wouldn't look more favorably on a guy who stuck it out with his team even though there was virtually nothing to gain by doing so. It's just that "opting out" won't penalize a great player as much as we think.

It is frustrating as a college fan because WE wouldn't dream of quitting on our favorite team. But players don't see it that way. They don't look at it as an "honor" to play college football. Just a necessary step to get to the real goal...NFL riches. As quick as they can get through college football, the better.

Teammates should care, that's why they call it a team sport.

most of them would be saying go get that money. guys like TM and JC only go to college to make the NFL...a degree is not what they are there for.

So many NFL players go broke down the line. No degree.
